Salon Tipping Question

For those of you who get special services done at a salon, what percentage do you usually tip?

I usually get a cut/wash/style and always tip over 20%. However, I'm thinking about getting my hair straightened and I'm estimating that will cost about $500.00. Would you tip $100.00 on that? Someone told me you don't need to tip 20% for salon services, so I dont want to overtip and look silly, but I definitely dont want to undertip either.

Any opinions?

Oh, I don't know about something that expensive. Maybe a stylist will chime in.

I'd be likely to tip pretty close to that, esp since it's a long extensive process, isn't it? I guess it has to be for being that expensive!

Yes, I do tip 20% or so. I pay $55 for shampoo, foil highlights, cut, blowdry, and style and usually give her $20.

   :faint:

I am just thanking the hair gods right now.....that I was born with straight hair! :p

I have a color and cut once every three weeks, and it's $110.00. I tip $20.00 each time. That's slightly under 20% (20% would be $22.00, if my rusty math skills are correct!) I do this instead of a Christmas gift to my stylist - he knows he comes out better than if I just tipped $5 or $10 and gave him a bottle of wine at Christmas.

$100.00 seems like a lot, though - I might set a max tip of $50.00 for something like that. BTW, I don't think anyone would think you were silly if you overtipped - I think they'd be thrilled!!!!

Thaks for the info.

LOL, tiggersmom2. Count your blessings. ;) Actually I could be wrong, I just estimated from the per inch price I had seen once (I forget what that even was, but I know I had the $500.00 figure in my head).

Good point, Liz. :teeth:

My SIL had her hair chemically straightened last March and it cost her around $400 Canadian.

Her hair is still straight and she had tight, tight curls.

Not sure about the tip thing though - why exactly do we have to tip our hairdresser? They are providing a service that they set the prices - why tip on top of that?

Just wondering.

I usually tip about 15% and have always wondered what the correct amount is. Debby
