Maybe our 4pm AKL Meet could do the Culinary Tour....... :scratchin

Good morning all. I have been somewhat lurking in the shadows of this thread for a while (I think I posted on IV a while back right after we booked our trip). In any case, I'm looking for some help/pointers from you all, or at least I am hoping you can help me out a bit.

I am planning on proposing to my girlfriend on our upcoming trip. I know I want to do it at the Lodge on our first day. We are not planning to do a park that day since we have Wanyama that night and I don't want to have ther nerves of proposing to be weighing on me for much of the trip. I'm really interested in "getting it out of the way so to speak". I turn to you all to give me an idea about where or when I should do it. I have spoken to IPO and Disney Florist but as of now they have all seemed pretty useless. Disney Florist hasn't come up with any ideas or suggestions and IPO has really only suggested doing it on the bridge in the lobby (which seems a bit cliche for my taste).

So, without many other places to turn, I put it to you Jamborinis, give me a suggestion or 2 that I can go back to IPO with. I have no doubt that frequent visitors to this thread would have many more ideas than IPO or Disney Florist.

TIA! :goodvibes :thumbsup2

You would have to clear this with the guides on the Wanyama, how about when you are out on the Savanna during the tour? They make a stop to serve some traditional African snacks and you could do it during that stop. :cloud9: You would have a small audience but you would be in a place at the Lodge where the general public is not allowed.

Having been on the Wanyama, I can picture a proposal - and what a happy dinner at Jiko that would be!!! :goodvibes

There are 3 spectacular (IMHO) options....and two really good one:

1) On the 5th floor, there is a suspension bridge that overlooks the entire lobby (don't worry..it's wide, safe, and has a good railing....no danger of her pitching over). It's a GORGEOUS view of the lobby on one side, and the large window that looks out over the savanna on the other.

2) The main rock outcropping (which is just outside that enormous picture window at one end of the lobby...you can't miss it) that juts out into the Arusha savanna. At the "end" of that outcropping, you're surrounded by savanna and it's just a gorgeous spot. There is USUALLY a CM out there, too...and you could probably (in a somewhat hush hush way) get them to take pictures of the proposal. The only downside to this? It's a high traffic area.

3) Also on that main outcropping is a fire pit. They hold (or used to) nightly story telling there...but when it's not in use for that, it's a very intimate and romantic spot. The fire pit is ringed with rocking chairs and....it would be a very romantic spot to visit after dinner/dark to pop the question.

Which leaves the 2 good ones:

1) Off the lobby, there is a little "lounge" area, called the Sunset Overlook on the resort map. It's on the same side of the lobby as the check in desk, and sort of "behind" the big ceremonial head dress/mask:

It's quiet, usually has no traffic, and it has a nice little "balcony" which also overlooks a savanna (the Sunset Savanna) with Kidani village viewable in the distance. The lounge OR the balcony would be good spots. Believe it or not, I can't find any pictures of it (which probably speaks to how low traffic it is). Anyone else in the thread have any pics?

2) On the right side of the lobby, sort of tucked away, is an indoor fire pit (Ogun's firepit). It see's quite a bit of traffic, but it IS a neat little nook. Again, in the evening (when the lobby seems to be less busy) it's a romantic spot to just sit an carry on a quite conversation. It wouldn't be a bad option, either:

Here's a map of the resort, which will give you some perspectives:

Is it just me? Or does it seem like AKL V has moved along much quicker than AKL IV did? 200+ pages already??!!

Congrats on the upgrade! :cloud9: With an Arusha view you will see a good variety of animals (zebra, giraffe, ankole, roan antelope, red river hog).

I can't say with certainty, but with Arusha view you should be within walking distance of the lobby! (It's a LONG walk when your room is at the end of Kudu or Zebra trails! ;))

Thank you. We're very excited as this will be our first time in a deluxe.

So, what I'm gathering is that the Arusha View is similar to a preferred room as it is somewhat close to all that AKL has to offer.

Now I just purchased a Savannah view so I could be placed anywhere. My brother, with whom my reservation is linked to, purchased a standard view. By looking at the map, it appears to me that we will most probably be placed on the Ostrich Trail as I'm assuming that the standard views are most located on the Entrance side of the Ostrich and giraffe trail buildings. And since the Giraffe Trail building does not have Savannah rooms, Ostrich Trial is the most likely. Are there any flaws to my thinking? If I'm right that means that I would most likely have a view of the Sunset Savannah. What can I expect with that view?

I understand that there are some rooms that have obstructed views that are considered Standard rooms. Has anyone compiled a list of these rooms and where they are located?

Your thinking is flawed only in that every time we think we have it figured out, Disney shows us how little we know!! You are correct though, the Arusha View rooms would be the equivalent of Preferred. :thumbsup2

When we were at AKL last week, we met guests who booked Standard view and had been upgraded to Savanna. Since your reservations are linked, I would think your brother would have a better-than-average chance of getting an upgrade. ;)

Sunset Savanna used to be the least desirable -- but that was before Kidani! Kidani's main Savanna is Sunset so there are LOTS of animals on that Savanna now! :cloud9:

I don't know of a room list. :confused3

Just make sure if there's something that's very important to you (such as being close to the lobby), you have that noted on your reservation. I've never had a "bad" room at AKL!! :)

Everyone was so helpful when I asked about taking my husbands expensive camera to AKL, I was wondering if you could help me with my other question. If we wanted to grab juice and muffins to eat on the bus to the parks, do they allow that? I was thinking of the Early Morning Hours.

They discourage "open" food on the buses.

That being said, I see tons of early morning risers scarfing down bagels, danish, and coffee on the bus to the parks in the AM. I think you're probably OK with muffins and OJ....though I would pack the juice in travel cups (or dole out juice boxes).

I wouldn't plan on trying to bring sandwiches, pancakes, cereal or a 7 course buffet, though. :)

Thanks, it'll be myself, husband and 2 grown children (young adults, actually). So less chance of a mess, since no young children. I was hoping we could chow on the bus on the ride to the parks. We'll give it a try.

Thank you so much. It was a great response. We're not as picky about location. I'm just very jazzed about being in a Deluxe for once. I thought that he might end up upgraded because of me. That would be pretty cool.

Good Afternoon Jamborini's and Kidanites!!!

Laura, LOVE the pics - awesome!!!

Not sure of when (what time) you are getting in, but you could have a private lunch set - up on your balcony, (I know for certain they do this for dinner, so I'd assume they can do it for lunch) you could add choc. covered strawberries, flowers, champagne, or whatever you like, and you could propose during your lunch?? You could even have them strew flower petals along your floor leading out to the balcony. Good Luck and Congrats!!! :)
