Saint Nick Comes Tonight!

I'm half German, and we always celebrated St. Nick's feast day. I'm Cajun, so we put out rice (uncooked) in bowls for the reindeer, and in the morning the rice was gone and the bowls were filled with fruit, nuts, and chocolate! We loved it when I was a kid. My husband had never heard of this tradition, but he was definitely game to continue it with our children. We are bad, though, because we've pretty much ditched the fruit and nuts part of that and go for pure sugar all the way! They get a large variety of candy, and sometimes small toys too. Can't wait!

my kids already have their shoes out and ready for him! lol.

chocolate santas, some kisses, dd is getting 2 pair of christmas earrings, the boys are getting hotwheels, and each gets a book.

I haven't ever heard of this. It sounds like a lot of fun though.

Well I'll be darned! Wish i had known about this sooner..:santa:

My daughter just asked if she could go to bed early tonight!!!! CRAZY for a tween to ask that, but she is so excited for St. Nick to come!

My friend is housing a foreign exchange student and she does this at her home in Czechoslovakia and will be doing it tonight at my friend's home. I thought it was neat.

When we were stationed in Germany back in the late 80's we did this. Outside of every front door in the apartment complexes were shoes. One year we each got switches decorated with candy to mean we were both good and bad. One year we got big bags of candy and I can't remember what we got the last year. It is a fun tradition and I wish we had kept it when we moved back to the States.

Hi-
I just wanted to remind everyone that St. Nick comes tonight!
What are your kids going to get in their stockings?
My 2 daughters are getting socks, Bath & Body lotions, lip gloss, snacks from World Market and Christmas ornaments to hang on the tree.

YAY! I always get a little bit excited for St. Nick's. hehe

Hi to a fellow Wisconsinite/Milwaukeean! :wave2:

Growing up, I was not aware of this tradition. It came to our house 7 years ago when my kids started attending their school (Preschool-8th grade). Each year on St. Nicholas Day, the students line their shoes up in the halls and a (beautifully) dressed up St. Nick rides on his horse (real) outside the school past all the classroom windows. While the very excited kids are watching for him to ride by, volunteers put candy canes in their shoes.

Since then, we've followed the tradition at home and my kids put their shoes outside their bedrooms. We fill them with fun holiday candy treats and candy canes. No little gifts (reserved for whole elves thing, lol). I love it, it is a sweet tradition. :santa:

Hey - I am 41 and my mom said they are stopping by tomorrow to give us what St. Nick brought to the house!

I love it.

St. Nick came to our house last night as always...

He always brings an ornament for the tree that the kids can take with them when they leave.. He also left a great ornament box one year, so they can be seperated.

One Christmas movie, and one Christmas CD.

A T-shirt and slippers, and a few small trinket. And always, some candy.

**we started the ornament the year DD was born and with all the ornaments other family members had given her, this will be the last year until she graduates from college and or gets married. We will start substituting something new... But I have til next year to figure it out!

Happy St. Nick's Day to everyone.....

My DD LOVED her ornament this year!!! I'm thrilled, because I had a really hard time finding one. At a mall kiosk, where they personalize the ornaments, I found that was a desk top, that had a laptop computer, an ipod, a stack of books, a phone and a hot chocolate mug. On the wall, there was a pennant, and a bulletin board.

So - her highschool's nickname went on the pennant (High school name was too long) and an activity she is involved with was mentioned on the bulletin board, and her name on the book, and theyear on the mug.

This was a CHEAP ornament too!

My daughter woke up at 6am today!!! She could sleep easily until 11 on the weekends if I let her.
My other daughter was happy too..........but not like my youngest!

We used to do this with our preschoolers. December was always "Christmas Around the World" month and we would learn about different ways Christmas and other winter holidays are celebrated around the world.

The kids weren't with us overnight, so we would make sure their shoes were in their cubbies at naptime, the kids would put out carrots and hay and then St Nick would fill their shoes with candy and a little Christmas plush. The kids were always so excited!

My son's Catholic school observes St. Nicholas day. The kids put their shoes outside the classroom in the hall. And St. Nicholas (me and the other moms) crawl around and fill the shoes with:

A candy cane
A stone
A pencil
A cookie
A gold coin

There's also an insert that explains each item and what it symbolizes, which escapes me at the moment.

St. Nick came to our house last night. DH says St. Nick fills the stockings. I say St. Nick fills your shoe. So, St. Nick does both in our house.

DD got an ornament and an advent calendar in her shoe, and a High School Musical handheld game in her stocking.
