Sailing out of NYC. When does the ship actually leave?

Some people in my FE group are worried about missing the sites as we leave NYC if they go to dinner. Last year on our cruise out of PC we left during the actual sail away party and were long out of sight of land by dinner. Will it be the same for NYC?

can't tell you the time but for reference the distance from the pier in Canaveral to open water is about 3 miles .... with the ship working up to a speed of around 8 knots in the channel ... so the trip is over pretty fast. On the other hand

from the pier in NYC to the Ver' bridge is about 13 miles and you are still in sight of land for some time after this point ..... and the traffic in the upper port area is usually heavy so this transit will typically take an hour or so ....

So if we leave at 4 it will be out by 5? Dinner is at 6 right? Shouldn't have to miss dinner. I would hate to do that to the servers anyway.

Last year we left after 5pm. We were able to see the statue of liberty before going to early dinner but missed the Verrazano Bridge.

From what I remember sail away was nearer 5 (if not after) than 4.

Yes, if you wanted to watch it all and had early seating you would be late, but I think it's a little expected on those cruises. Just be ready to go right to dinner and be a little quicker at dinner than normal to get you through...

I cant remember exact timing, but when we cruised on the 10/15 sailing out of NYC last year, I remember we were *just" able to see the Statute of Liberty before running to dinner (a little late for the 5:45 early seating), but missed the Verrezano Bridge. I was disappointed. Its a lot of fun to sail right under it. Something makes me think we left port a little late, though...

We're planning on being as close to ontime as possible, but may be up to 10 minutes late. We're not going to order appetizers or salads so we don't mess them up too bad.

We got to experience it all in 2012 but we always do 2nd seating. We are excited to be going on the Magic out of NYC this October and next year 2018. But, it's not new to us. I used work in Manahattan and my husbands office is in Brooklyn.

Going under Verranzano Narrows Bridge is a pretty cool experience. You also, pass Ellis Island on the right. And Freedom Tower on Left. I think you may be able to see Governors Island and a bit of the Brooklyn Bridge from the left side or back as you are in the harbor before going under the bridge.

Hopefully, the ship will leave on time and you will get to see it all.

Last year we sailed from NY - both of our sailings left the pier at just about 5pm and it took until just about 6pm to go under the bridge. If you have early dinner and want to see the whole sail out, including sailing under the Verrazano, you would be showing up to dinner about 20 minutes late.

Just to throw this out there - our recent cruise from Dover left like 5 later than expected. So remember anything can change. But like others, we saw the Statue of Liberty and then went to dinner when we did NY last fall.
