Ok so I read Ducklite's thread and it got me to thinking. I am a SAHM and have been for the most part for 13 years. I graduated High School worked in fast food and grocery stores and then had a child. I am now going back to college and getting a degree in a field I am interested in. I know that I will start at entry level as a paralegal because I just got my degree when that happens. Will I still have a really hard time? I am going to college to help ease my way back into the workforce. I will also learn something I really want to learn. I just wonder am I crazy. After Ducklite's post I worry that I will never work in a real job. Crazy as it seems that has always been my number one goal. HMM. So what do you think?

Everyone finds thier way either early or late
I feel a college degree helps although a lot do not agree but if you ask me give yourself every edge you can and you will find what you want sooner or later..
even if you do not need the degree at first you may be offered an oputunity later that requires it which may not have heppened if you did not....
Good Luck :thumbsup2

I think once you're in the company your work ethic gets you promoted. The last few promotions my dh has gotten has been for jobs that required a master's degree but because of his previous work he's been offered the jobs.

In most companies it's the softness of your lips and size of you pucker factor that gets you promoted!

:happytv: :rotfl2:

I'm not implying your husband is a butt kisser!

I'm also a SAHM heading back into the workforce (after 17 years). I have my degree already, although I'd like to take at least a few classes to help make myself more marketable. Problem is, the reason I'm going back to work is the reason I can't afford to take classes right now... I need the money!

I'm looking for entry level jobs and confident that once I get my foot in the door I'll advance pretty rapidly. I know what I'm capable of. The hard part, of course, is that foot in the door thing!

Good luck to both of us!

Edit- um, I read the other thread and I want to clarify that by entry level I mean something that a college graduate would be offered- not a file clerk. Unless it was a very well paid file clerk, of course...

I don't think you're going to have a hard time. Demand for paralegals is pretty good, and you'll be coming straight out of school.

It sounds like you have realistic expectations of the kind of position to apply for. You can start out in an entry-level role and work your way up!

The problem the OP in the other thread was referring to is that sometimes people new to the work force (new grads, SAHPs) try to aim too high in the beginning. For example, I have one friend who has been out for 7 years and is going around applying for jobs as an HR Director. It's unlikely she'll be hired for something like that right away after being out for so long. She'd have a much better chance trying for an HR Generalist or a first-level HR manager and then looking for an opportunity to get promoted.

Best of luck to you!
