Safeway fuel discount

How does this work? The receipt I got today says I have accumulated $43.09 towards my next powerpump reward. Also says I've accumulated 18 powerpump 10 cent/gal fuel discount(s).

The cashier didn't really know and I can't find any info at Safeway's website.

My understanding is that for every $50 you spend (I thought the $50 had to be in one shopping trip however), you get .10 off per gallon of gas you purchase at the Safeway pump with your bonus card. It sounds as though you already have spent quite a bit to have 18 trips credited. Without the $50 in spending your bonus card would only discount the gas .03 per gallon. I think there is a poster by the gas station area explaining how it works.

This is how it's supposed to work, but IMO I think you get the max discount all the time. I hardly ever shop Safeway (maybe 1x a month), and I rarely spend $50 but I always get the .10 discount.
