Safely changing ressie

I have an existing reservation that I want to reduce (we will be arriving a few days later than expected). Do they just modify my existing ressie, or will they cancel it and create a new one? I am concerned if the latter that something might jump in during the intervening period, and we lose the ressie that we want.

They'll just modify it. No need to cancel.

I called MS just last week with the same question, and they will just modify the existing ressie. No need to rebook.

The other option -- if you have the points to do it and will not suffer any penalties, banking deadline issues, etc -- is to book the dates you want and THEN cancel the previous ressie. That protects you during that intervening period.
