safe areas around Sandusky, OH

We are going to Cedar Point for a few days later this summer and we do not want to stay in a hotel and I don't want to stay on property. Our preference is to stay at a rental property, and I'm finding some great deals on VRBO.com, but I don't know the area well enough to decide where to stay.

For those that know the town: are there bad/preferred places to stay in or near Sandusky? Any suggestions?
