We're spending a day at Animal Kingdom and would love to dress my 6 and 3yr old girls in Safari gear. Has anyone done this? If so what did you do?

TY

I was planning on doing this for our breakfast at Tusker house. We have a local zoo here, so my DS already has the $5 zoo hat (pith helmet style).

Then, I made up a graphic and am going to just put that on a white T-shirt using one of Amy's Iron Ons. Each of us will have the iron on shirts and DS will have the hat as well.

I got a map background, layered a picture of Donald tracking prints and then layered a picture of Tigger hopping up and down in front of the tracks so Donald ends up tracking Tigger. I put "First Trip" on DS's graphic in African font and then all of us have our names at the bottom of it in an Indiana Jones-style font.

If you have any sewing skills, you could make them a simple vest. I still have my GS Brownie vest from back in the day and would just use that as a pattern. If you made it a little big, they could use it to play with for a couple of years.

Are they old enough to use a camera? You could possibly give them each a disposable camera to record what they find on their safari trip that day. There are lots of interesting things to look at that are kid height at AK: foot prints in the cement, the animals, colorful artwork and patterns around the park.

And of course all good explorers need a hat for sun protection.

Just make sure that whatever you choose is quickly packable when you arrive at a ride and won't fall off easily.

Well, I am not crafty, but I think that gymboree had a line of safari type stuff at one point. I would look online. You could make it disneyish with a T shirt or hat

We actually picked up a safari shirt/short set one of the times we were at Disney Animal Kingdom. It was a while ago though...2007, maybe. They also had pith hats with mickey ears on them at that time. We're headed back next year, and I like the idea of dressing for safari...might just have to see if it fits our daughter...we bought it for our son.

Maybe someone knows if they still carry this?

We went to our local zoo again this past weekend and I noticed they have the safari vests there too. $14. So if you have a zoo near you and if you're not very crafty (like me), you could get a vest there probably and then just do an iron on or a patch to "Disney-fy" it.

I bet you could find something similar at a sporting goods store in the fishing section too.

At Rainforrest Cafe (in AK and everywhere else I suppose) they sell a kid sized straw pith helmet safari hat.

At walkmart (and lots of places) they sell a line of educational toys called 'Backyard Safari' that includes a Safari Vest that is really quite good.

Backyard Safari also has some pretty cool edu-toys that are quite useful.

I just bought safari style vest at the Dollar store. I Disneyed them up by using fabric glue to attach Mickey heads to the back of them. I'm cheap and so I really didn't want to spend much on a one time wear item.
