Sorry to here you were ripped off. I'm not a lawyer but it seems to me being a DVC owner is involved with real estate/ property ownership, after all we do pay the taxes. Maybe there is a way of putting a lean on his membership, that way he would not be able to sell it without paying the lean.

As someone else mention, if you used the USPS to mail him your check contact your local postmaster and see if they can persue this. My understanding is that they can persue this as postal fraud whereas if you used FedEx, UPS, Airborne etc they couldn't do anything since it was a private company making the delivery. I've sorry for your misfortune and I hope the person that did this to you gets his eventually.

I'm so sorry to hear about this. I've been away for the past couple of days and was upset but not surprised to read something like this.

A while back I posted about the number of renting issues that we've been seeing lately. I just wish those renting points would watch who they rent from by making sure they have some experience and those wanting to rent would learn the system before they start renting points.

Please pursue this with whatever authority will listen to you.

I lost my MIL to cancer 4 years ago and this year alone have lost 5 people dear to me to cancer, funny how we can put men on the moon or robots on mars but can't find cures to our diseases( I am a diabetic)

Not all DVC'ers are shady, actually 99.9% are pretty cool people.

Query:

If you rent points from a DVC member and are not a DVC member yourself, how do you find out in advance if the ressie is still valid? I tried calling Member Services just to check my upcoming ressie and they would not give me any information because I was not a DVC member (yet).

Actually, even if you are a DVC member and are renting points ,they aren't supposed to give you the info because you aren't the owner of the points.

This is where the trust part comes in.

What happened to Diane is very unusual,most DVC members ,I think, are honest. Just like most people are honest.

It really is too bad one bad apple can cause a lot of problems.

i believe you call the resort direct a few days out from arrival and give them they conf. # to check everything is still in good standards. but like i said only a few days out, because the ressies are not in the resort system until a few days before arrival. one time i had ressies for the contemp on points that another member made for me and a few days before i called the resort direct and everything was fine, this was when i first started to rent and the member lived out of the country i was nerves but i ended up with a good friend and we transfered points/ressies until she had to sell her contracts because they were moving to celebration town

As a previous poster mentioned all you have to do is search the op's psts. She contacted only 2 people regarding point rental. One is a dis board moderator with 4,000 some odd posts. The other is a name I do not recognize with I think It said 6 posts,,,

Folks do not rent from someone with only a few posts, be able to see if they have shown more than a fleeting interest in the boards themselves.

Actually I did consider this, at first I thought it was definitely a scam (I guess I am a jaded NY-er). Then when I went and looked at the OP's posting history I could see she did indeed attempt to rent points a while back, so I became less suspicious.

Interesting thing is, if you look at the O.P.'s old posts, someone else asked a question about the safety of renting points, and she was one of the people who reassured that person, saying she'd rented before and you can trust people on the DIS boards. This DID seem like a weird coincidence.

I am still not 100% convinced the OP is for real, but I would hope no one would make up such an emotional and sad story in hopes of a free trip. That's even worse than someone ripping off a renter.

Realize, too, that when you are renting points off of the rental board that you don't always reply to a thread when interested -- sometimes you just send an email to the Renter's email address. Therefore, the OP may have showed interest in a possible rental, but chose to send a direct email, bypassing a reply to the thread.

I think what LakeAriel said (though stated a bit harshly IMO) has crossed the minds of at least a few of us. It's strange that during this 5 page thread (so far) there's only been 2 messages from the OP (incl the original message). If this is a scam it's definitely a new low.

I don't think lake ariel said anything so terrible. She did not say the op was lying, only questioned it. She made a point of saying that if the story was true that she wished the OP well.

As another who has too much experience with the Big C (Mom died of it in September, older sister very sick with it), I think it would be totally despicable to use something like that to get anyone's sympathy if it was not true. I assume it is true, but as another poster said it is odd that the OP has had so little to say during this 6 page discussion. That does not make her a liar, but it does raise my antenna of doubt just a tad.

I'd like to believe the world is full of good and honest folks, and for the most part I think it is. But I live in NY and I have seen too much written about people who used the 9/11 attacks for their own personal gain. Sadly, there are those who think nothing about profiting from tragedy.

I imagine the OP's story is sincere, but let's face it--we don't know for sure. And I don't think Lake Ariel was wrong to bring it up, as Judson said others have had the same thoughts.

considering your medical history, why not just book a trip, since it's january, rates are down, see what you can find either at the villas or at the Lodge, you can find packages that include everything, and there would be no worry of your trip being cancelled. It may cost more, but no stress.

I'm just saying thoughts shouldn't have a non-filtered, direct connect to mouths ( or fingers in this case ). If the OP's story is true, what reason is good enough to justify the harm caused by posting what-ifs and maybe's? It's one thing to mull over things in your own mind, quite another to post what-ifs and maybes on a public forum that cast doubt on another's integrity.
