Sad news

We saw the scene today. I was unaware of the news story until it was posted. Very sad indeed.

My prayers go out to the family of the deceased, as well as all the families on the bus who were about to start their WDW vacation.

Disney officials confirmed the crash, saying the Magical Express is a Mears Transportation-owned and operated bus service that runs between Orlando International Airport to Walt Disney World.

Wow, really?!? Did that really need to be clarified so quickly?

Always is when the news is bad :(

Thoughts and prayers to all involved.

It's so sad. I agree with you. Especially since we witnessed at least 3 near misses between cars and Disney buses on our last trip.

The roads looked wet in the photos. My first thought was that it was around the time in the afternoon for those flash downpours. If it was torrential, visibility could have been almost non-existent. Those rainstorms always scare us.

Those rainstorms scare the day lights out of me. When I was a kid, my grandparents were in a horrific car accident right outside their development where they lived (Fort Lauderdale area). It had rained terribly that day, and the accident happened at night. Somehow when my grandfather was turning into the development, the car ended up in a canal. Autopsies confirmed he hadn't had a heart attack or anything like that and neither did my grandmother who was sitting next to him. The theory is he hydroplaned (the "puddle" was over 100 feet long and almost 2 inches deep) and lost control. Both he and my grandmother passed away as a result. Because of this I will never live in Florida. I notice every single canal when I am there, large or small. No guardrails of course. And they all remind me of that tragic time.

My heart goes out to all people involved and their loved ones. So sad and tragic. :(

very sad. prayers for family.

dd was on her way from the mk to her apartment at that time and said it was pouring like crazy.

very sad but for the same reason the lady on the bus is tweeting her kids were traumatized over the entire thing while still waiting to be moved to another bus.
cast members who work in the parks could write a book. its a sad world at times we live in. people where complaining about waiting two hours on a bus. :sad2:

The accident happened before the afternoon downpour. When we went up the ramp that eventually everyone was diverted to- it was still dry.

We drive to WDW, and the guests on the roads on property scare me - they have no idea where they are going, and do the strangest things. We once almost got run off the road as a guy drove over the grass and breakdown lane because he changed his mind about the exit  There are just so many people there who are driving on those roads for the very first time.

Once we are there, we stay on Disney Transportation for the very reason behind this accident, which is that you never know what people will do, and you are much safer on the bus than in the car. People stop in the middle of the road, change lanes without looking, and try to squeeze in between buses when there isn't enough space. Other articles about this accident state that witnesses said the woman had stopped her car in the middle of the road. My guess is that she was lost, hopefully she wasn't thinking of taking a photo.

The woman driving the car was from Orlando, I doubt she was lost. The "natives" here drive like idiots and do really stupid things, like stopping in a travel lane and the other things you mentioned.

RE: that woman tweeting, I see a lawsuit coming.
And, you are right, it is sad that people complain about waiting for another bus, there is a woman who lost their life, they should be happy they are alive.

It always amazes me when Disney does this. They contract out to Mears...their name is all over the darn buses. Come on Disney...basically it's your bus!

Don't get me started!!! I know Bostonians drive like nuts, but down in Florida?? The roads are basically straight...no one used directionals, they hit their brakes at the last minute. They drive way too fast. By the time I get home from two week stays with my family north of Ft Lauderdale, I'm driving too fast, slamming on my brakes and never use my directionals!!!! Someone should have built curves and hills into the Florida roadways!!!

Why? She was sitting on the bus with her children and tweeted while waiting. How could that possibly bring a lawsuit?:confused3

And, while your post sounds "PC", I don't agree with your statement. You're telling me you'd be happy to be sitting on a bus waiting for a couple of hours? All because someone did something stupid that cost them their life? The woman was stopped in the travel lane, for whatever reason. If her car stalled, she shouldn't have been sitting in it. If she just stopped, then, that's just crazy. Either way, it's not the bus passengers fault and while they can feel for her and her family, they are allowed to have their own feelings about the situation.

Why is there a lawsuit of a person sitting on a bus for two hours posting on social media that they were stranded??????

It's called gaming the system, in this case trying to extract a cash settlement.

Worse yet, people who were outside passing by have been known to get on board (figuratively and literally).

"Walk right in, set right down"

Then pull out an iPhone and start tweeting about how they are going to sue.

"See something, say something." Guests seeing shenanigans such as the preceding should pull out their own iPhones and photograph the surroundings (including the bus interior) to make it easier to identify miscreants.

A small number of potential lawsuits could be averted if Disney quietly honored late arrivals for meal reservations, say at Le Cellier or 'Ohana, by guests delayed on a bus and also quietly saw guests home with some added pampering if it was a Magical Express bus back to the airport.

I think the idea was that the "tweeting woman" on the bus would end up suing Disney for traumatizing her children, or leaving them on the bus for x hours, or...

I have to agree; this is splitting hairs. So you want the credit and advertisement for the bus and service, but can't take accountability for the driver or the safety of the bus?
