I think perhaps the poster just misspoke--I would say the ideal use year is that of the month before or the month of your usual travel. Since we usually go in early September, we got an August use year so if something happens with our September plans, we have till April to travel before we either 'trap' our points in the use year or have to bank. So perhaps they said the month after when they meant the month before.

This makes more sense. UY is the one thing I seem to have trouble wrapping my brain around, even after nearly 5 years.

I think it has more to do with your banking deadline if you should have to cancel.
