Sad border story

That's so sad! The poor kids!

I think desperation is what drives this sort of behavior. They must have really been suffering back in India, or at least believed that life in the US would be better enough to be worth the risk.

I hope that maybe some others see this and avoid the same fate.

We have situations like this all the time, most recently this week as a matter of fact. Ours don't freeze, they drown.

This week's sad story is a boat that left Bimini (Bahamas) with 40 people aboard. Shortly after leaving Bimini (in the middle of the night, naturally) the boat capsized. A boater spotted the capsized hull near Ft. Pierce Inlet (about 80 miles NW of Bimini) -- and he rescued the ONE survivor. So far, 5 bodies have been found and the USCG is stopping the search at sundown today.

I heard about that capsized boat.

So sad that people are this desperate. They probably had no idea what a Manitoba/Minnesota winter is like. And they chose one of the coldest nights to try and cross.

This is pretty local to me so it’s been all over our news. The man that was being held on Human smuggling charges was being held in our local jail before he was released. It’s such a heartbreaking story.

Just FYI, the USCG conducts smuggling interdiction operations throughout the Caribbean. Most of those caught are fleeing Haiti or Cuba, and very few make it through the Coast Guard's operations.

They are usually taken to our naval base at Guantanamo, Cuba where they are offered voluntary repatriation to Haiti or the ability to apply for asylum. Very few qualify for asylum, but Guantanamo is better than the alternative.

We currently have something like 11,000 Haitians detained at Guantanamo.

Sounds like human trafficking was at play, as they couldn’t have found their way alone. Also likely unprepared for the frigid conditions they encountered. How could someone just drop them off like that? Heartless.

The night they crossed it was about -15 Fahrenheit without the windchill. With the windchill probably close to -40.
They walked in deep snow drifts and howling winds.

Have you read any mention of how they got to Canada and why they were so intent on getting to the States? If they were refugees they would have been eligible for status here.

They apparently were legal (passports/visas) to enter Canada via the Toronto airport. Couldn’t they have stayed 90 days?

I’m thought I read one had a fake student visa?
They were part of a bigger group that crossed over. One lady that made it to the waiting van is losing fingers to frostbite.

here in YUma, in sight of the medical complex, 2 a week drown in the irrigation canals that border mexico. water is cold and fast moving, perhaps first time in such water. ....alas no news wants to cover the sad border stories...it is a mess here and the are transfered back into one of mexico poorer border towns.

It is HUGE news here because it is such a rare occurrence. In 2017-18 there were actually quite of few people trying to migrate illegally into Canada on-foot from the US; particularly into Manitoba, Quebec and New Brunswick. Not common to hear of it going the other way though.

Until one has experience fear and desperation one cannot ever understand it. That is why the previous southern border situations have been so depressingly hostile, no more warranted then witch burning and uncaring as it became. Those of us with freedom and comfort do not understand what motivates people desperate to survive will take chances that seem foolish, but are a form of survival. Sometimes it works, sometime it doesn't. Such is life.

valid observation....the problem though life is being lost here on the californina/arizonia border because of a false hope that they will have a new life, that is what is being broadcast to them with the open border.....but it is not going to happen because they are immedialty bused back to mexico....with court dates now years out and a continuance of being victims in crime in mexico.. The witch burning is US administration pressuring Mexico to stop the flow and if it becomes our problem...we are sending them back to you mexico. So that is why the current desert deaths in Calif.....have to cross without being caught....drownings in Yuma result of false information that once in Yuma all is fine .....but not true. It has become so bad here that for the first time in 4 years we have lived here....there is no Yuma freeway screening station....it is closed down because of lack of border patrol deputies and more focus on Calif crossings. and I have not seen anything on national TV about the canada problem...if not for the daily newspaper here in YUma...would not have known the problems in the north.

My son lives in SE Arizona. We have seen numerous border control vehicles in that area, and were stopped at a checkpoint once while visiting. Son has been stopped numerous times. The checkpoints are moved around in that area. Although I will concur, my friends daughter in the army national guard was sent to San Diego to patrol the border. Her job was to watch through some sort of binoculars/scope and report the coordinates of people seen illegally crossing. Then those on the ground would go pick them up.

national guard observation is 100% "your bleeding, I have a band aid in my pocket but federal law says I cannot apply it to the wound" Here in Yuma they are doing the driving, handing out water and papers, supply orders....basically the nitty gritty bureaucracy groundwork of the problem but no actual contact of the folks.
