i would like to try to get a good pic of runners in movement..the book calls it a flash fire..well what settings do i use to get this effect..I'm really new to this camera so give me step by step instructions...please!!! thanks for any help on this subject.
 
These runners will be outside? Will you have nice bright sunlight?

also what camera are you using?

You will need a high shutter speed to freeze the action (or slower for panning shots - depends on the effect you are after) - use Shutter priority mode and manual select a high shutter speed, or use the preset action setting.

Select Continuous auto-focus mode.

Select Continuous shooting more.

You should be able to keep your finger on the shutter release and fire off a number of photos in one go :)

It may help also if you have a fast memory card.
 

in the daylight it should be no problem to stop the action. Even with ISO 100 setting. If it is overcast or worse then bump the ISO all the way to 400 if needed to get a faster shutter speed. I don't know exactly the right number but I think 1/200 or faster should work. Remember to check the histogram to see that the curve is not too tall or too short. Too tall (like touching the top of the graph) is overexposed too short is underexposed.
My replay info is set to "thumbnail with histogram and shot details" showing...
