S/O - Do you see the point in owning a Rolex?

Rolex watches often go for five figure funds. A LOT of money. Me? I don't see the point. I'm not even drawn to their designs, in general. You can get far more attractive and unique time pieces that work fine for a pittance. And for all that money on a Rolex or Patek Philippe watch? You could live comfortably for a year AND go on holiday to Disney!

What is the point? Just to feel big?

[ETA] You can't even show it off on nights out - you'll get mugged!

Hell no. But I do not care about any high-end fashion items. Fancy purses, designer clothes, jewelry, all a waste of money in my eyes. But that's me. If someone wants to spend their money on something, that's their right. Our biggest spend by far currently is on travel.

Nope - not a Rolex kinda person…however… I wouldn’t have the same response if it was a Patek Philippe…I would love love love one of those.

This is it, in a nutshell. It’s a status thing for some people. They have to have the most expensive and most luxurious item and then make sure people know they have it.

There are people who genuinely like Rolex watches (and other luxury brands), but it seems like the status thing is what draws in the majority of buyers.

I feel the same way.

I really have no desire to own one. I like Apple Watch too much to do a regular watch. I knew somebody (she is deceased now), had a Rolex and didn't like it really.

I inherited a Rolex and cherish it mostly because of my memories of the giver.

Why did he own several pricey watches? Certainly because he admired the workmanship but also because it gave him a feeling of accomplishment.

I guess this is a “to each his own” thingie much like…. oh yeah, gaming and the mechanics associated with it!

See, that totally makes sense to me. I don't usually go for expensive watches but I have a lovely Longines time piece that I'll never part with as it was a 21st birthday present...

I'll have to disagree with the above.

Much like NCYgrrl I inherited a Rolex from my Mother, and I have the further joy to have been with my father when he bought it for her as a gift. I wear it almost every day. It neither makes me feel big, nor is it a status thing. Also - I think some folks have a blown up view of what a Rolex costs. Yes some can be quite pricy, but no one is surviving for a year with what mine cost!

I enjoy wearing mine, I like the weight of it and I consider it akin to wearing a nice piece of jewelry. My parents are still both alive...I 'inherited' the watch when my Mother received another watch to commemorate a major milestone and gifted the Rolex to me. I really treasure it and look forward to the opportunity to pass it along to my granddaughter one day. If something should happen to this watch I'd probably replace it with another Rolex.

Discussions like these remind me of my WrestleMania story.

I was in Las Vegas in April and while at a blackjack table the topic of prices for tickets to Mania came up. I mentioned that I was in town for the wrestling and someone asked me how much I spent on tickets. I told him and he asked “So 60,000 people will spend that much to watch wrestling?” I replied “on average” and he said “what a bunch of idiots”. He said that while in the process of getting what was at least his second $10,000 marker to play blackjack and had a prostitute in the chair next to him.

That moment really drills home to me that we all have our own sense of value and enjoyment.

Adding: I am not suggesting that Rolex watches are in any way equivalent to blackjack, wrestling, or prostitutes. :)

There are several companies who make high-end watches, Rolex is only one of them. Unless the case is made from 18k gold, you are mostly paying for the status associated with these. Reminds me somewhat of the pricey purses various companies sell for women. There is a huge profit in all of these items and someone at the top of the food chain ends up being rich.

Rolex lately seems to be spending a lot on TV advertising during pro golf events. The fact some top golfer wears a Rolex (probably given to them by Rolex for free along with a hefty check to wear it) doesn't make me any more likely to want to buy one. I don't get the whole appeal of celebrity endorsements when they probably never used the product before becoming a paid advertiser. How a company measures the success of such endorsements I have no idea.

Watches in general are just jewelry. The cheap crappy digital watch you can get for 5 bucks in a gas station is a vastly superior time keeper than a mechanical watch.
