S/O Coronavirus School Closing considered in your area?

We got word today our district is closed through April 5th. Some schools have prom scheduled that same weekend. I feel sad for all those graduating this year.
Even though presently my alma mater's campus is still open the classes and all are going remote soon. In any case school sponsored events and whatnot are limited to 50people and this was before CDC came out with that recommendation until May 11th..graduation is 6 days after that and the way it looks that could be extended given the whole 8 week guideline from March 15th..it'd be cutting it extremely close.

Walking down the hill (as the main campus for the University sits ontop of a hill) for graduation is probably the most important tradition to my alma mater's graduation ceremony as you walk through a bell tower on your way that signifies your compeletion of your degree.

Gosh it just suck for all of those in the school system I feel :(

Same county as you in NJ and April 20th was our expected date to return too. But I’m thinking the same thing....they’ll go back in September.

The governors press conference was pretty stern.

Wow!! I really hope the schools aren’t closed until next year. :scared:

Fairly insignificant, but the WIAA (our high school sports state governing body) has suspended the Spring season of all high school sports. :( My DS would have been devastated if he wouldn't have been able to play baseball his Senior year.

School I work out in NJ got the word yesterday we will be closed at least 2 weeks

my dd and did attend college n Florida. They started spring break but found out Thursday they will be going to all online classes for at least the 2 weeks after that, and maybe until end of the year.
I feel like it is gonna be probably be thru the rest of the school year. I really hope I'm wrong.

Welp it did seem like only a matter of time as this was all unfolding

"There will be no school in Johnson County, Kansas, through at least April 5"--that's 6 school districts total

Silver lining IF and that's a big IF it's only through April 5th that will be 10 days of learning lost (plus 1 day they used for deep cleaning). I'm not holding my breath here as that could def. be longer. For reference school typically ends before Memorial Day or around Memorial Day.

My DS9 online school (I-Ready) started today - (NYC) - We were told that it was going to start next week, but actually glad it started today ! Less "downtime") !!!

What type of school? Public, charter, parochial, or private?

My daughter is a fifth grade teacher at a NYC public school. The teachers went in today to be trained for online teaching. She goes back in 2 more days and then I believe they will start. She will then work from home.

Yup and it's caused a crap storm of confusion

Some of the school districts said there would be nothing as in no online learning including several in my area, notices from school districts said the governor ordered all schools to close the State Board of Education had to send out a notice stating they are clarifying it's only for In-Person and they can go online.

It's a gigantic mess. No one knows a darn thing about what's going on. Parents are freaking out because they don't know what is going on. They are getting an alert saying all schools are order to close but it really meant move to online but districts are being all confusing wording it as if there will be no online. "Further details to come" don't help at all.

Today the governor of CA said CA schools may not reopen this school year. I'm a 3rd grade teacher, and even though I was halfway expecting it, the statement hit me really hard. I never thought I'd see something like this.

Right now, my district isn’t doing any kind of distance learning because they don’t know how to meet the needs of the students that have IEPs and receive other accommodations. As far as I know, no districts in my area are doing distance learning for the same reason. I know this is a fluid situation and by next week we may be sending work to our students digitally. Who knows?

My question is, students in my state still have 50+ days of school left this school year. If there is no school for the rest of this school year and no distance learning, will all these students advance to the next grade come fall? It seems kind of crazy to me.

Georgia has canceled all end of year testing and they are giving parents the option to have their kids held back if the parents feel they aren’t ready to move on

Good to know, thank you!

I wish PA would follow suit and cancel state testing.

My intial thoughts were when I was seeing some of the districts in my area announce the governor mandated all close (really meaning buildings) was if they are not going to do online learning then the next school year (which the governor mentioned they'll be reviewing over time if they will even reopen in August) all lesson plans for the upcoming school year need to be severely condensed to make up for lost information so basically remove fluff. Some of the stuff being taught are building blocks for the next year (especially math).

It's really the juniors who are preparing for college and the seniors graduating who suffer the most here. But logistically it may be difficult for those on the bubble meaning those that were in elementary school who would have been moving to middle school and those who were in middle school who would have been moving to high school.

All MO schools are out but the length of time varies by district. They have 555 districts and they all closed voluntarily.

It's been considered a dichotomy between our two states and one that has not gone unnoticed (both in positive and negative light) in the news.

Now it's left up in the air what really went on behind closed doors to get all districts to close without the state government publicly ordering it but an interesting development none the less.
