S/O Coronavirus School Closing considered in your area?

My school is on spring break this week and then per the governor we are on a 3 week long spring break end of day Monday. So I think it is silly to send kids back for one day but we will see. Plus I work at a charter school with children who are autistic they already have a hard time coming back from a break can't imagine how it will be when we actually go back.

My 3 kids had their last day at elementary school today in Boone Cty, KY. They will be homeschooled until April 20th or until the statewide emergency is lifted for the state of Kentucky.

Today was necessary to attend as my kids got instructions, chromebooks, paperwork and books sent for at home assignments. My 2 older kids will teleconference in with their teachers daily and have attendance taken. My 1st grader will do paperwork assignments and some computer work but not a daily teleconference. We then email or hand deliver the paperwork assignments to a drop box at the school. The teachers and staff will still report to school daily.

So I assume your students will receive the same or atleast instructions on Monday.

Atlanta Public Schools too. 55,000. So two big systems down. Talked to Fulton teacher at school and he said they had meetings to discuss how they would teach if they close. Feeling was it would be a directive from the Governor but of course Gov just put it back on the schools ....

GHSA (sports) are deciding as I type how they are handling the sports programs. This stinks because this is a clear decision to give some regions advantage of continuing to practice and compete and when tournaments come in a better position. No surprise.

ADDED: Dekalb closed 102,000. Haven't seen official but news saying Fulton closed until further notice. 94,000.

At this point we are talking about around 400,000 kids so far.

ADDED: Gwinnett closing for a week for now. Another 180,000 kids out.

ADDED: Coweta 19,000, Henry 40,000, Cherokee 31,000, Douglas 27,000 ... up to 700,000 minimum.

In Georgia most school systems are COUNTY wide with the metro Atlanta counties being huge. It also means lots of kids without daycare, and it will def impact the city businesses as parents are staying home. News photos show huge lines at stores shopping for food and basics.

I told both of our older kids earlier today that I was thankful they’re not involved w/ any prom or are high school or college seniors this year.

Our DD is a sophomore in college & is an English ed major. She was in the middle of a semester-long practicum at a local high school. She loves the high school teacher w/ whom she was paired, so she’s disappointed.

Our older DS is a freshman in college, & he’s in an “Intro to Forensics” class. The class had an end-of-the-year project they were all excited about that involved a body that‘s been buried for a while... akin to the body farms at large universities, but smaller scale. So they‘re all bummed. (Meanwhile I was like, “Cool. You won’t have to do that gross body thing!”)

All Maryland schools are closed for 2 weeks starting Monday. All state employees are to telework if they have the capability. The National guard has been activated. My boyfriends employer has said to work remotely indefinitely. I think mine will give that directive tomorrow, for at least 2 weeks.

DS’s college is going remote next week, he has spring break now. My DS’s high school is starting remote on Monday, tomorrow is teacher training. DD’s high school starts remote next week, I am keeping her home tomorrow. NYC public schools are still open though.

No cases in Coweta yet, but closing due to an abundance of caution due to cases in surrounding counties. They will have OPTIONAL online learning activities. Other interesting thing is right now, the kids would be going back to school the first week of April, then having a week long spring break. My guess is that over the next two weeks we will end up getting cases in the county and schools will end up being closed at least through the end of the current spring break. Just a prediction.

My DD17’s school is closed til 4/15. Remote classes on Zoom until spring break (4/3).

Dd12’s school is closed until 3/31. No virtual learning for her. Not sure if assignments will be posted on google classroom but I expect they will.

I think you are right on the rolling issue. I think that is why they are closing, even without many reported cases, to hopefully avoid further closings. But more will come to light and I see them going through the spring breaks. Fingers crossed the game plan helps to start to starve it.

I'm hoping my employer gets off their butt and says for everyone to work from home. There are literally zero functions in our office that require being on site. Otherwise, we have families sequestered at home, being greeted every day by people who have been potentially exposed...

Most universities and schools in SO CAL are closing down or about to. Theater in LA closed, the NBA and other sports franchises closed, and all major theme parks closing Saturday. My boarding school near Pasadena possibly closing Monday.

DD has graduated but we still get the UNLV newsletters. They will go to remote learning on the 23rd.

K-12 still open but all after school activities, sports, practices, assemblies, field trips and performances are canceled. They’ve also closed down the salad bars. I have a feeling they’re trying to get to Spring Break which starts 4/6.

Our suburban Denver area district finally gave notification last night that they are closed from today until March 27. Next week was spring break anyway. They made today a teacher workday and said that students may enter the schools to pick up anything they may need from their classroom / locker. No mention of online learning at this point as I think they are really hoping to just re-open on March 30. With 9,000 employees and 55,000 students I definitely think it is the right call! Last night most every district around here announced essentially the same length closure. Both of my teenagers were thrilled.

For most typical schools sending work home and being able to do work online is great. However, my school is not a typical school we don't teach from specific books or curriculum as all our children are autistic and special needs. My class personally is all non verbal kids so hard to adjust our style of teaching when schools are closed. Though I do think it is best because they don't have the best immune systems and those that do most don't understand proper hygiene techniques and could spread the virus easily. We are still waiting for the school to give an official plan.

Yesterday DS2 told his kids "see you in a month" and it really kinda hit the kids. He said they are sad, kinda "depressed" especially the seniors. Guessing it could be prom and graduation could be cancelled. Their social during the day and their after school cancelled. For the athletes, not having a season or coming in at the end against athletes who have been training and competing during this time ... means some of their finishing dreams gone. Some of these kids need that teacher or coach interaction to keep them positive and engaged. For many this is their life and the thoughts of it shut down for four weeks or longer is tough. He said he felt really bad for them.

That is tough. Once DS1 was out of school for a surgery and then extended time after that. School really provided me with NOTHING for him. It took a good bit of work on my part to create a schedule, create activities that were productive, to keep him on task when his room or tv "were calling", make sure we got outside and moved around a bit. My goal was to keep him engaged, transitioning and not sedentary until he returned to school.

On Wednesday evening, I attended our regularly scheduled swim team board meeting.

Toward the end of the meeting, talk turned toward the virus. One of the board members works in our local public school system, & she said school officials were meeting the next day.

Regarding online instruction, there was apparently already talk & concern about not every student either having a computer at home or having internet capabilities. Also, there was concern for students who had IEPs or other specialized instruction. Even if a student has a computer w/ internet, not every student can continue their specialized education that way.

So, the next day, public schools were closed through 3/30.

It has not been officially confirmed, but the rumor circulating is that it is an “extended spring break” &, at this time, they’re not going to try to implement online instruction. If schools have to stay closed longer than these 2 weeks, then who knows what will happen.

As it is on the school calendar, the schools’ regularly scheduled spring breaks are not until April, so there are some parents upset w/ the possibility that the spring break has been moved from April to now (March) & extended for a week & that, in April, if schools are back in session, schools will no longer get the April spring break week.
