I would love to hear how any of you are doing with multi focal contact lenses.

I am almost 50, always worn contact lenses for long distance needs. But now am having a loss of up close vision due to middle age. :sad2:

My eye dr. recommended trying these multi focal lenses and said it will take time to adjust to them. I am finding them to be a lot of work in terms of focusing my vision. I'm not sure how successful I will be. I've only had then 10 days.

Appreciate any insights. Thanks! :goodvibes

I wear a far distance lens in my right eye and a close-up lens in my left eye. I don't feel I see as well as when I wear glasses but I certainly see well enough to get by. The convenience of the contacts usually outweighs the difference in vision. i only started wearing contacts a little over a year ago and I did find I had an adjustment period, but I would say that had more to do with adjusting to contacts in general than it did to wearing the two different lenses. I say give it a shot. Just buy one box and if it doesn't work out then go to plan B.

My DS15 wears multi-focal contact lenses, I still don't really understand why, everyone tells me he's way too young to be needing them, but he's done well with them, so much that it's hard for him to go back to his glasses for distance. It did take him a few weeks to get adjusted to them and then he had headaches for another week or so, but once he adjusted, he says they are really great, he sees the best he has in a very long time.

I've heard many times they are hard to adjust to, to give them time but I would say if you haven't adjusted after another week or two, to go back and see how they can adjust them to work for you.

Best wishes...

Thank you. People shouldn't be telling you what your son should or should not be wearing, I'm sure your eye dr is doing what he feels is best for your son's needs.

It is frustrating getting used to something new. I have an appt next week so I'll just see how it goes. I feel like my night vision is worse, headlights and traffic lights seem blurry. Sigh....

I have worn contacts for over 35 years (rigid gas permeable), due to severe near-sightedness. When I hit early 40's I started with the close-up vision issues. I switched to one contact for distance and one for close up. That has worked well as I don't need reading glasses then.

I asked my doctor about the multi focal lenses. He said his patients have not had that much success with them. Maybe 3 out of 10 are happy. So I didn't bother with them since I am happy with distance/close up contact method.

Is it blurry or is there a halo effect? When I wear my monovision contacts (one for reading and the other for distance) at night, I see halos around any lights. It's really annoying. Your vision will not be as clear as it would be with glasses, but it is convenient to wear contacts. It took me about 2 weeks to fully adjust to those contacts. I also have bifocal glasses and it took me about 3 weeks to fully get used to them.

My dr said he is getting about 50/50 results but felt if you could adjust that the multi focals are a better system. I had been using a slight version of the one contact for up close and one for distance. I didn't have any trouble I just felt like both were a compromise and hoped these would be better. Some things seem really clear and others worse.

It is a bit of both, sometimes almost double vision which is a bit strange, only lights at night though. Yes you are right about the convenience of contacts, it would be hard to go back to glasses full time after all these years.

I appreciate everyone sharing their own experiences, really helpful. Thanks! :)

i didn't have any luck with either the one for up close and one for distance method or the multi-focus lens. believe me, i tried very hard but didn't feel comfortable with my distance vision. it just doesn't work for some people. my dr. said he hasn't had much success with multi-focus lens. good luck to you. i hope you can work it out.

I am hoping to switch to these in the near future. I have to use up the single vision contacts I have on hand first. I really think I can make them work. I never thought I would have much luck with the near vision for one eye and far vision for the other. I just did not see it working for me at all.

WOW, I'm sorry to hear some of you are having trouble. I have never been able to tolerate contacts (wicked migraines) but the multifocal ones have been amazing for me. To me the transition is absolutely seamless from close to far away, but I have a very mild close up prescription. Could it be that one of the prescriptions is just wrong for you? Otherwise maybe either the near or far sightedness or both could be made more mild so the transition wouldn't bother you as much? Just suggestions.

I have worn contacts for 30 years and just got the multi focus. I love them and did not have nay transition issues. My doc said you either will do well or not and will know within a couple of days of wear.

I did not go the one contact in/one out route due t motion sickness. My doc said that if you have issues with motion sickness that that options is not a good one.

Good luck with your choice!
