If anyone is familiar with the Ryan Center in RI, can you tell me if there are any places to grab a quick dinner near the center? We are going to see the Wiggles tomorrow night (4 adults, a 2 yr old and a 3 yr old) and we are wondering if there is anything close that we can grab for a quick bite.

Thanks!

There's an Applebee's about four miles away I think... we just went there a few weeks ago... The Applebee's was near the Holiday Inn in that area.

Unless I'm mistaken the Ryan Center is the campus of my alma mater URI. There should be a pizza place and some other eateries on the top of campus. This would be on the complete opposite end (East on 138) of the Ryan Center. You can look for Upper College Road. How do you plan to get there?

Mike - you must be talking about "the Greeks", a long-time favorite pizza place!! I'm also a URI alum! :D

Cinmel - Our local papers have posted major traffic warnings for those folks going to both concerts as they're both sold out!! The campus is reached by basically a country road that's 2 lanes in most places. I was recently at the Clay Aiken concert at the Ryan Center and we were stuck in slow-moving traffic for a while to get there.

MikeB63's suggestion is probably best, get onto campus and find the places he's talking about. If you head to Applebee's as also suggested, you'd better allow extra time to get to the Ryan Center because there will be traffic. The concession stands inside sell hot dogs, pretzels and stuff like that too.

Most of all - have fun with your kids at the concert!!!!

Gail,

We were at the Clay Aiken concert too!! Can't believe there was another DIS'er there!!!

We are coming from Boston and these are the directions we got:

From the North
I-95 South Left exit #9 RI-4 South towards Newport/South County
Merge onto RI-4 South
Take Exit #5B RI-102 towards Exeter
Left onto South County Trail/RI-2
Left onto RI-138/Kingtown Rd.
Left onto Plains Rd. and follow signs to Parking

The show is at 6:30 and we are leaving from Downtown Boston, South Station area to be exact (have to pick my husband up from work). If I pick him up by 4 will I have enough time?

Thanks for your responses, I appreciate them!

By this route you will be coming from the West, going East on 138. You will hit the Ryan Center before you hit the top of campus where the eateries are. Once you reach the Ryan Center, it will be easy as Kingston, for the most part, is the campus. There really isn't too much else around there, but homes unless you drive a few miles away. If you choose to go to the top of campus, just stay on 138 past the Ryan Center and look for Upper College Road on your left. There should be a traffic light there and a big stone monument for the university. You could also turn onto Plains Road and follow it to a right onto Flagg Road and pick up Upper College Road on the right. In any case have fun!

I live about 2 miles away from the Ryan Center and I'm a URI grad. You have good driving directions and do allow for traffic. Actually, you have directions for the "back way" into Ryan. The rest of Rhode Island will probably take Rte 4 to Rte 1 to Rte 138 so you'll probably get there faster.

Also, on the URI campus, you can find food but it's too far to walk if you park your car first. There is also food in the Ryan Center --typical fare of hot dogs, nachos, etc. No cold spaghetti, hot potatoes or mashed bananas.

As for restaurants, drive past the entrance to the Ryan Center (stay on Rte 138) and take a right on Rte 108 and follow the signs to Wakefield (the road winds alot). There is a Chelos (very much like Applebees) on Rte 108, past Tim Hortons. If you take a left at that intersection where Tim Hortons is located, you'll find Burger King, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Dunkin Donuts, and Taco Bell. Applebees is on Rte 1 near Holiday Inn. To get there, stay on Rte 138 until you reach the light at Tower Hill Road. Go south on Rte 1 and it's about 3 miles down the road. HOWEVER, you will NOT be able to then go North on Rte 1 if you plan to return to the Ryan Center because of the median. You will have to follow Rte 1 South and take the Wakefield exit, then and follow Rte 108 to 138. Way Too Complicated!!!

Have fun at the Wiggles!
