Running for my Disney - Now a PTR!

That's great
You are so inventive with your flights - I would never have thought of the combinations you come up with... And always such good deals
Wonderful that your trip is all staring to come together

I can't take credit for our crazy flight schedules - that's all DH's doing :thumbsup2

He spent a while trying to decide whether to go ahead with it or not, because it did use up most of his points. However, I reminded him that he has been saving his points specifically to do a long-haul flight in business class, and the flight times and days were perfect for him. Plus he's still got nearly enough points to cover a return economy class trip to Fiji, which I think is pretty good. I don't think we'd get a more perfect opportunity to use them.

Excellent news! Nothing like having locked in flights.....especially business class.

Shame about the extra days or lack there of in Arizona.

I'm so relieved I've got some exact dates to work with :goodvibes Even if it does mean missing out on Arizona  I'm sure I'll get there one day, maybe when it's not so hot :thumbsup2

And in running news...

I'm up to 30 minute walks now, and yesterday tried to increase the pace. I'm incredibly excited to say that not only did I not feel any affects from the surgery, it is actually the first time I've EVER been able to walk that fast with no shin pain!

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

It makes me pretty confident that the surgery has worked :thumbsup2

Also this morning I did about a 25 minute block with some hills. Not only did I manage the hills just fine, I actually maintained a better pace than I did on flat walks before the surgery :goodvibes

One more small update...

Although I have recently learned that this year's 10k will probably be Stitch themed :crazy2: we have already decided on Alice inspired running gear. Dad wanted me to add a reference to 'down under', so here's what I've come up with.

Mum will be Alice, I'll be Cheshire Cat, and the boys can fight it out between the Mad Hatter and White Rabbit.

Since DH isn't doing the 5k with us, I've gone a little bit girly (sorry Dad).

I'll be Piglet (him and Cheshire Cat are my favourite Disney characters), and Mum will be Tigger. If Dad wants to, he can wear a yellow t-shirt and blue shorts and be Christopher Robin :rotfl:

Mum and I will accessorise both our outfits with sparkly skirts, appropriately coloured compression wear, and home made ears.

Those t-shirts are great!

And congrats on the great progress with your legs. Everything is coming together nicely for you. :)

What they said - clever girl and the T's look great plus  for no pain. Looks like you're well on track for the event.

Recently I've been re-thinking our DLR strategy.

The original plan was to just go in time for the run and related events (expo), use that and DTD as our entertainment, and leave the parks for our week later on.

However, DH has stuffed up that plan by leaving early :rolleyes2 He is heading home on the Sunday BEFORE we get back to DLR, so would miss out on the parks entirely. Add the fact that I have already bought his 10 day hopper, and it makes sense for him to go to the parks while we're there for the run. Obviously he will want some company.

Even though we won't be using each day of our 10 day hoppers on our return week to DLR, each day has to be used within 14 days of the first use. So if we used them to enter the parks on the Saturday only of the run weekend, they would expire the day before my birthday  So I started looking at APs. The return week to DLR is not a problem - no block out dates there. However, both the Saturday and Sunday of the run weekend are blocked (I assume because it's a long weekend for Labor Day).

My dilemma is this. I've pretty much decided that it will make sense for me to upgrade to an AP, which I will have to do in person now that I have the 10 day pass. If I upgrade on the Tuesday I arrive, I will get to use the discounts for nearly a week before we leave on the Sunday. However, I will not be able to enter the parks with DH on the Saturday. This is a pretty big deal as he won't be arriving until the Thursday afternoon, so will only have that afternoon plus Friday and Saturday for park time. And that will be eaten into with running related activities and resting.

After much searching on the DLR boards, I've discovered that there is a perk which allows access to the parks on the day of the upgrade. So that means if I wait until the Saturday to upgrade my pass I can get in with DH. However, I miss out on nearly a week's worth of discounts, making the AP less value.

The merchandise discounts aren't a big deal as I assume they won't apply to the RunDisney merchandise, and I can wait to buy anything until we get back. The dining discounts would definitely be handy. However, I will be on my own Tuesday night so won't really be 'dining'. We also won't be doing any big meals until after the running is finished either. I've already missed out on the AP benefits (early and discounted registration) for the run, and won't be able to use the accommodation discounts.

Working on Plan B (ie me upgrading my pass on the Saturday so I can get in with DH), we're working on a tentative park strategy. On Friday morning we have the 5k run, which starts at 5:30am. We will be in the last corral, so may not start until nearly an hour later than that. We will definitely be done by 7:30am. We plan to return to the hotel to have showers and change, then have a leisurely breakfast at DTD while waiting for DCA to open. When DCA opens, run in and get fastpasses for RSR. Then we can go back to the hotel for a nap or more down time if we need it, and come back later for a few hours at DCA including RSR and all the other stuff we missed on our last trip.

Saturday will be the 10k, which will also start at 5:30am. That will take a bit longer to be finished with. DH had a pretty good suggestion to make a reservation at Blue Bayou for an early lunch (it's the only dining he really wants to do), and use that as a post-run brunch. That will give us time to go back to the hotel to shower and change after the run, and leisurely make our way back across. We can enter DL a bit early, upgrade my pass, and pick up fastpasses for Indy on the way. The other great thing about that plan is that with an 11:30am reservation, we should be able to get a waterfront table. Then we can spend the afternoon (which I know will be crazy busy) doing fastpass or rides with shorter lines.

I have no idea what my parents will do yet. If they're only concerned about going into DL on Saturday, it will be better value for them to just get a 1 day 1 park pass for that day (especially since only one of us needs to have the pass to get the discounts). If they do decide to upgrade, they will have to wait until the Saturday too.

Thoughts? :confused3

And sorry this has turned out to be such a long post!

Tough one. I can see how this would be a dilemma.

Sorry, I'm not sure what to suggest, but good luck working it out.

I'd forgo the AP discounts on those few meals to spend the time in the park with DH on the Saturday - especially if it means a meal at Blue Bayou. To me that time together would be more valuable.

Is your DCA day an EMH day for resort guests? If not, I'd just try and be at the front of the pack and head straight to ride RSR, you can always check the wait for FastPass on your way out. If there's nothing element you want to ride in the morning I think you'd be waiting just as long in either queue! I really need to start running so I can plan some RunDisney trips. Sounds like heaps of fun.

Not an easy decision.

Like ssour, I would upgrade on the Saturday too.

In any event, I think you're forgetting to factor in your decision the most important thing when purchasing an AP. It means that you and DH will NEED to come back before the 1 year is up. :thumbsup2

Yes, trust DH to stuff up my perfectly articulated plans :rotfl:

I'm probably leaning that way. We can just try to keep most of our dining for when we have the discount, it just means that DH will miss out. He's really only concerned about BB anyway.

Unfortunately Friday does seem to be an EMH morning for DCA. But because it will be DH's only chance to ride RSR, we'll make sure we do what it takes to get a fastpass. Doesn't matter when the return time is. I suppose we can always try on Saturday morning too, it will just mess with our post-run plan a little bit. And if he's really desperate, he will be able to go in first thing Sunday morning on his own and ride in the single rider line.

Not an easy decision.

Good luck with that one :lmao: Especially now we've used up all our FF points :rolleyes1

Ok next question...

I only have accommodation booked from the Thursday night at the Desert Inn & Suites. I'll now be arriving on the Tuesday afternoon.

I know on a practical level it would be better to just book a standard room at the Desert Inn & Suites for those first 2 nights. But part of me likes the idea of taking the opportunity to try somewhere different, maybe somewhere a bit 'nicer'? Unfortunately due to budget restrictions DLH is out of the question :rotfl:

I plan to get a park fix on that first evening, just at my own leisure (quite looking forward to some solo time actually!), so anywhere else I stay would still need to be conveniently located (up to about 15 minutes) and reasonably budget friendly (as close to $100 per night as I can get it).

Any suggestions?

I won't need to convince your DH. You will. :teeth:

Have you considered using Priceline to bid for accommodation?

Well there's no way I'll be able to convince him! Unless we somehow win flight to LA or something...

I actually considered Priceline for our last trip, but it all seemed a bit too hard! I'll have another look and see if I can figure it out now I've got a bit more travel experience up my sleeve.

Remind me, have you booked your new flights? If so, who are you going with?

I think trying Priceline is a great idea. They only guarantee that the rooms you book will sleep up to 2 people, so if your parents will be with you you may want to try Hotwire instead.
