Running Down a Dream 2: It's All About the Swag

Hi Scott,

Your 2:00 a.m. post really made me think about how I am spending my time. Am I appreciating life or just letting the little things pass me by? I think one of the reasons that I love walking (and maybe running someday!) is that it allows me to slow down and examine life. The busyness fades away and it's just me, God, and my thoughts. It sounds like that is what running has allowed you to do too. Thanks for sharing Scott.:goodvibes

Great job on the run last night!:thumbsup2 It does seem hard to believe that the holidays are right around the corner. Santa will be here before you know it!:santa:

Hope you have a great rest of the week! :goodvibes

Ahhhh....nothing better than listening to Jimmy Buffett in the winter time. Boat Drinks.....great winter time song when you're wishing for that warm sun!!! Thanks for the idea Stacie...I think maybe I'll put some JB on the iPod and make a little run mix for those days when the cold is getting me down. Parrot Head runners UNITE!!!! pirate:

As always Scott...and it goes without saying....you're training schedule is very impressive. I just can't get over the miles you logged this past weekend. :worship: GREAT JOB. I'm in awe of your dedication and hard work.

This weekend is the big 12! Hope you have a great LR :).

Hijacking the journal...

Amy--Sounds awesome! I love the Parrot-Head idea! I feel a Disboard/WISH/parrot-head run/meet coming on in Key West!!! OK,well at leat at OKW at WDW! :lmao: Parrot-Heads UNITE! :goodvibes pirate:

Oh yeah, and HI Scott! :wave2: Glad to hear your run went well and you kept your usually "hot body" nice and sweat-ball free! Hope you have a good run today!

Yeah, if I ever get an ipod or something similar, I'll have to pull some of your suggestions for good running music!

Have a great day!
Stacie

Another parrot head here, I just never thought about working out to him before.

Awesome job on the solid run. Some of our neighbors have already hung their Christmas lights. I think the older we get, the faster the years fly by.

Have an awesome weekend,
Beth

Man you are getting philisophical on us! That is great because it was very motivating for me this am to read your 2 am thoughts.

Now I am one of the few who can't listen to music while I run. I am a parrothead so maybe JB would be different.I have to say other than Linkin Park and Fall Out Boy I have never heard of any of the other bands you mentioned and I was a huge radiohead in my earlier years- before ipods,etc...

Good Luck with your training,
Linda

Chapter 1
Scott

Hmmm...

So we're all Parrotheads?? NICE!! Now if I could just figure out how to attach the margarita glass to my fuel belt....:drinking1 Not sure how the grass skirt, hawaiian shirt and intricately designed drinking hat will hold up during those 14 milers either... ...maybe we could all just get in a conga line?? Could conga run some 15 minute miles I bet....:confused3

Chapter 2
Scott

Did the elliptical/bike combo for 40 minutes on Wednesday night and completed a chilly 5.2 mile run last night. I've also officially added Pilates into my routine (thanks buddy) and am shooting for 30 minutes each day, at least 5 times a week. Amy, any classes I could come up and take? Can you hook a fellow runner up? ;)

Chapter 3
Scott

Work was getting busier than a mall Santa on Christmas Eve. And thinking of Christmas reminds me of eggnog. Eggs are just eggs. And vodka is my warm elixir on those chilly snowed in nights. Maybe it was the nutmeg that was kicking in, but I soon found myself speaking with Dr. Goose. I gulped another glass down as I remembered how I got into this whole Goofy situation. Christmas led to running...and running led to DISboards...and DISboards led to ...Dr....are you still there?

Ok ok....maybe listening to this audio book is starting to get to my head.

I hope everyone has a great day!!

Disclaimer:
If you've never listened to an audio book, I apologize in advance for the confusing format of the post ;)

OMG....that post should have come with a warning. Just took a drink when I got to chapter 3. TOTALLY LMAO here! :rotfl: :rotfl2: :lmao:

Geeze....:lmao: .

Phew.....omg.....sorry. Channeling some James Patterson via audio book. Good lord Scotty. :rotfl:

OK....people....if you've never listened to Beach Road on audio his post made no sense. If you have....it's truly hilarious!!! Thanks for the tears rolling down my cheek. Took me a few minutes to get what you were doing but wow. Awesome.

OK....back to our regularly scheduled posts about running and training and nutrition and marathons........

WOW! I go away for a few days and I come back to these posts! Philosophical posts at 2am! and audio books! YIKES! I need to stay in touch more during the week!

At any rate, you are doing so awesome with your training! You are like the Energizer Bunny Scott..you just keep going and going and going! I get tired sometimes reading about all your training. You are going to do so great in the Goofy in Jan!!!!

As for music, I am a big country music fan.....so I have a lot of country on my ipod.

Hope you have a great LR this weekend!!

:rotfl: I LOVE the margarita in the fuel belt!!! Might not be able to run straight though!!!

Yeah, you totally LOST me on Chapter 3... I've read the book Beach Road, but never listened to an audio book. I still thought it was pretty funny! We have own disboards resident commedian.

Hope you had a great long-run this weekend!

Stacie

Hello everyone!

Just think, if we were a basketball team I could say...

Hello sWISHers!!

Anyway, some tough workouts, along with a little undernourishment led to a strange run yesterday.

First of all, as you know I added Pilates into my routine. I did between 20-30 minutes on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Let me just say that when done properly it is one of the most difficult workouts in existence!! The catch is that you really have to focus on what you are doing, and understand each exercise and what it is designed to accomplish. I can say that my powerhouse (ie. core, ab region, flab zone) was engaged the entire time...but instead of boringly doing crunch after crunch, I got to do some pretty cool stuff. What I thought was more of a Yoga kind of thing...mostly stretchy and kind of girly...is actually a very intense and very beneficial workout. Amy, I don't know how you can do it for an hour, let alone multiple hours each day!!

On top of my core being worked out to the max, I did not eat well leading up to Sunday morning. I thought I was doing good, but when I look at each meal it just wasn't enough. I had way too many sandwich style meals that did not provide the necessary sugars/proteins/carbs/calories needed to survive cross training Friday, Pilates each day, an 11:30 paced 6 mile walk on Saturday and the 12 mile run on Sunday. Thank goodness I avoided the bike ride!

So the run started off horribly. My first few miles are never very tough, but by the end of mile 2 yesterday I was ready to throw in the towel. I was light headed, my legs felt like tree trunks and my breathing was all over the place. I really wasn't sure that I could continue. I can't remember feeling that bad during any run ever.

I decided to slow down and grind out one more mile, then turn around if need be and call it a day. Luckily, that mile went by a lot better and by the end of mile 4 I was feeling back to normal. A caffeine infused gel pack at the 45 minute mark provided a real boost and I was able to finish out the 12 without further incident.

About an hour afterwards I was back to feeling bad again even after I ate (and guess what I ate...I'm giving that annoying Jared dude a run for his money at Subway). Some Advil and relaxation thru the day...along with some sugar (candy, yeah!) and a HUGE dinner...and I was once again feeling normal by the end of the night.

All in all I think food was the biggest culprit. Working out so much and running for long periods of time means that I have to be much smarter with what I'm eating on a regular basis. So, today it's back to the weekly meal plans that my coach ( ;) ) and I came up with a while ago. A solid rotation of chicken, fish, beef and pasta strategically placed for maximum benefit and minimum repetitiveness.

So that's my story...what else is happening out there?

I hope everyone had a good weekend...and a reminder...get the workouts in this week, Turkey Day is looming on the horizon!

...that reminds me, I need to sign up for the Gobble Jog 10k Thanksgiving morning :)....

Hi Scott :wave2: Sorry to hear your run started off badly! (Glad to see you are human though! ;) I was starting to think you're training was way too perfect :goodvibes Yes, ::yes:: this is jealousy and envy speaking)

How smart of you to be able to analyze what you've eaten and be able to identify WHY you had a bad run. That is good! I wish I had a meal plan! Everytime I try, it always get screwed up! I have found that for me, popcorn before running makes me tired... Guess what I'm having now... popcorn:: Yep...not too smart. Hopefully by 530, I'll have some energy!

Time management question...HOW do you find time do it all??? Pilates for a 1/2 hr PLUS Cardio??? Gee whiz!

OH, you WALKED at an 11:30 pace??? Good lord? I'm no expert, but that seems to be more :teleport: McSpeedy!!!

Keep up the great work! I know you are going to do AWESOME in January!!!

Note to journal:

The walk was a walk/run...4 minutes of walking followed by a 1 minute run...wash, rinse, repeat. I could never straight walk an 11:30 LOL!!

Still pretty fast there Scotty!!! Do you still do a 4/1 run/walk in your running or do you take breaks as needed or not at all there Mr McSpeedy??? :goodvibes I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be able to run the 5K, so just wondering what other folks do...

Have a good one!
Stacie

*stepping on soapbox*

Important Life Lesson of the Day: If you burn a bazillion calories you need to eat almost a bazillion calories or else you pass out. ;)

Anyway...yes....I know I sound like a broken record. But....a sandwich is not dinner. ever. BUT especially when you have run, biked, done core work, and scaled Mount Everest. :rolleyes1 OK...so maybe that's exagerrating. But just know that I do hope to be running with you in January. So you need to survive the training buddy. Running lightheaded is only allowed if it involves drinking, a frisbee and good old rock 'n roll on the boom box. Otherwise...running is best done with a clear head.

*stepping off soapbox*

OK....so why am I thoroughly depressed that your "bad"..."lightheaded"...."low blood sugar"...."fueled only by a sandwich" run was still 10 minutes faster than my run. :confused3 Yikes! I WILL catch you Speedy McSandwich.

Hey there Scott--sorry to hear about the tough run, but it is great that you pushed through it and after a few miles in you felt better. I have to agree about the whole nutrition issue, it is amazing to me how a few bad meals before a LR can really throw you off. That is one of the biggest things I am learning throughout this whole training process..NUTRITION! I am still no expert but I am learning!

Keep up the great work!!

Hi Scott! You have continued to amaze me -- 30-something miles over the weekend?!! Holy moly!

Sorry to hear that the run the other day was a tough start.. Heck i would love to get to that 2 mile run mark - Well, i guess that's on the books for me by friday! Yikes!!
But, congrats on sticking to it and pulling thru.

Thanks for all your encouragement on my journal - it really helps!! I would love to know more about that nutrition and breathing.. that is what i need to work on myself.

And congrats on starting Pilaties.

Hey Scott,

You are doing a great job! I like how you pushed through the tough start of your run and kept going.:thumbsup2 Keep up the good work!:cheer2:

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your posts. The audio book had me :lmao:. I listen to books on my walks and in the car. I was honestly crying from laughing. The way you analyze the culprits of your not-so -great workouts really help me to. It reminds me not to get complacent. I need to go back over my food journals and see where I should tweak my meals. Thanks again.

Have a great week,
Beth
