Just wondering if my husband and I can realistically RUN without bumping into chairs and people? pirate:
Is it a 360 degree lap that is truly dedicated for this cause all day long?

Thanks, DIS NURSE from Oregon :flower:

Deck 4 is wide enough that I doubt you would run into chairs, the chairs are pushed up against the ship's wall. But the Deck is not dedicated to runners and walkers. We spent a lot of time there sitting in the chairs and watching the kids run around (they were pretending to make drinks and serve them to Mom and Dad) :teeth: . You will probably see some other traffic. The shuffleboard boards are also painted on Deck 4.

That being said, I would have to say that most people would be courteous of those who were trying to walk or run, and move over. Plus, if you exercised at hours where there weren't many people there, you should have no problem.

Deck 4 is definately NOT dedicated to running all day long. Most of the day there are people walking, strolling, playing shuffle board (I have seen the disc shoot out into the path of walkers/runners), people gazing over the railing or playing with their children.

Very early morning would be the best time to "run".

I walked Deck 4 a couple of times in the late evenings & hardly saw anyone. It is a 360 loop, though it gets a bit narrow on the ends of the ship.

The earlier you walk/run, the less folks will be out.....try to go early in the am...it is cooler and less humid anyway....

Also, the treadmills in the fitness area are heavy duty and ideal for running....in addition, you have the added benefit of a view overlooking the bridge and out to the water.....

At what time does the fitness center open/close? My DH is a fitness freak and needs to run on a daily basis.

Even when the deck is a little crowed, you can pass people that are slower runners or walkers. The only time passing is "hard" is when you go around the end (or front) of the ship and the path narrows quiet a bit. And most everyone usually runs/walks the same way (counter clockwise). On sea days, definately go early, by mid-morning everyone is out strolling on the deck.

I second the advice about going early or late. That said, if you have to go midday, keep an eye out for kids and objects that might roll into your path, maintenance workers, etc. If you don't get too "zoned out" you'll be OK. Also, if you're coming up behind someone and want to pass and they don't know you're there, usually a polite "excuse me" or "behind you" as you're coming up on them will do the trick of getting them to slide over a bit.

One other warning: don't run on rough days at sea. In the bow of the ship is a sloped ramp. I went running on a rough day and I was down in the bow of the ship on the ramp when we must have gone over a wave. All of a sudden, the ramp just drops away and then just as suddenly it came back up right as my foot was heading down. I got a nicely jammed knee that was sore for a couple of days. So be careful!!!

Fitness Center opens about 6AM closes around 8pm. If you are going to go get there as close to opening time because it gets crowded. I have ran on deck 4 every cruise and as long as you get down early in the morning or later in the evening there are no problems.

Plenty of room! :)

are you sure fitness center opens at 6...I always thought 7......can anyone verify this?

Has anyone clocked the milege on deck 4? I always say I'm going to run on vaca. But when it comes to actually putting on my sneakers and doing it is the tough part. :cheer2:

I believe 3 laps on deck 4 = 1 mile. My sister was training for a marathon on our cruise last august and ran every day. She just went out very early and had no problems at all getting all her miles in.

From what I read in the Passporter's Guide to the DCL, four laps around deck four is equivalent to one mile.

I'm in agreement with others about an early morning run. I hope to experience this on my upcoming (first) Disney cruise. One of my best experiences at WDW was an early morning run along the river between POFQ and POR. A nice run through the POR area especially.

My husband and I did three laps walking every night of our cruise before bed (probably between 11 - midnight). The sea air put us right to sleep! Every night it was just us walking and - I think - a handful of crew members jogging. Plenty of room for everyone!

Hello...I am the original poster of this thread and I am glad to hear from all of you! :flower: So glad to hear that others are thinking about exercise and that there is a way to offset the FOOD,FOOD,FOOD..."is it time for another meal or drink, honey?" :rotfl: I HAVE GOT TO LOOSE 5 POUNDS BEFORE NOV 12TH OR I WILL FEEL REALLY CRUMMY COMING OFF THE SHIP pirate:

I am an avid/obsessive excerciser and you better belive that I (and hubby within reason...but he needs to watch the kids early in the am!) am gonna' be circling that deck many times to feel worthy of ALL THAT FOOD I WOULD NEVER CONSUME IN ONE WEEK AT HOME! :cheer2:

Again, though, can anyone confirm that the gym opens at 6am VS 7am?
I'll surely be running and/or on the stairmaster with a blood alcohol level of >0.08 at that time in the am! :earboy2:
