We have a huge oval pool. We use it all the time. My question is how long do you have to have that pump running?

Last summer between the A/C and the pool pump my electric went up between 150.00 and 200.00 a month. We did have the pump running 24/7 but the central A/C is on a timer. It is set a little higher during the day when no one is home.

I am wondering if we put the pool pump on a timer also and only had it running a few hours a day if that is an option or would the pool get yucky.

With the price of everything else going up I was hoping to keep this from not getting so high.

Thanks!!!!

Hi

Unless you have a had a wind storm or large amounts of rain, or maybe a gib pool party I would try running it over night and off during the day. We have a medium size inground and the recomendation is 8 hours a day depending on the on the size of your filtration. If it is sized correctly 8 hours should be plenty

Good Luck

I live in Florida, I run my pool pump 8 hrs a day, 10am to 6pm in the summer months and less the rest of the year.

we have a 16 by 32 foot built in pool that is extra deep ( 5 ft in shallow end
9.5 in deep end ) Our pump is hooked up to a switch inside the back door, I flip it on when I leave at 9 AM and turn it off when I come home 5 pm.

I do not know why I run it this amount of time I just do :rotfl: . The pool stays nice and clean.

I would imagine that you could definately run your pool pump for less time.

Well that gives me hope!!!!! I think we will try the 8 hour run and see how it fairs. We live amongst the trees and bugs so maybe I will have it turn on when we leave and shut off when we get home. That way it should be nice and clean to use late afternoon and evenings.

Hopefully this will save us some money.

We have 25,000 gallons. I run it about 10 hours a day. I've tried to cut that down but I always end up with yucky water when I do.

Our pool is surrounded by trees though. That really doesn't help pool cleanliness any.

We have a 16 x 32 inground pool and its on a timer from 12 noon to 6 pm..

We have a 27 inch round above ground pool that is 5 feet deep all around. We run our pump 8 hours a day and it keeps it nice and clean! We usually run it during the day and turn it off at night. :)

We have a 30 foot round, 54?inch high pool and except for the opening week where we run it 24/7 we put it on an outdoor timer box and run it aprox 9am-6pm. Since it is usually windier during the day, the skimmer is working during the day time, when it is needed. I know some people who only run it at night, but something about the pool motor noise makes me think of summer and doesn's bother me at all.

We have a 24ft round above ground and we run our pump 8-10 hours a day. I have never heard of anyone running it 24 hours, did someone recommend you do that?

Same here-that's exactly what we do. Does anyone here use the Zodiac Nature 2 cartridge system in their pool? We do and I highly recommend it. This will be the third season using it and it has ben incredible!!! We only use about 1/4 the cholorine that we used too, hardly ever need to use shock and haven't had to use any clarifier or algecide ever since we started using it. It's been so nice and cyrstal clear all the time. We have also noticed that it is better on all our swimsuits-no nasty cholorine smell or fading. It's great:thumbsup2

Can you tell me more about this Nature cartridge system? We just moved into a new home with a 27' round above ground pool. Still learning all the ins and outs!

And we've basically been running the pump during the day, off at night.

We bought a timer this year and run it 3-4 hours during the day and another 3-4 hours at night. We have a 16x32 oval and it seems to be working since the water is crystal clear. I'm hoping the electric bill reflects that this year.

We use the Pool Frog, which I am guessing is just about the same thing? We use less cholorine with the Pool Frog and I never have to worry about it since it releases it into the pool by itself. I only have to change the cartridge every 2-3 weeks in the summer. I love it and it is so worry free! :)

We have temperatures in the 100+ degree range and I run the filter 8 hours each night. Partly because of my electric rate structure, but mainly to run it during cooler temperatures so there is less pressure on the grid during the hottest hours of the day.

If you have a heavy use period, you might want to consider turning it on an hour or two earlier those nights.

During the winter (all 3 or 4 months of cooler weather!), I usually set it at four hours per night.

Does anyone here use the "Pool Blaster Catfish" to clean their pool? If so, does it work good?

Electric usage rates are generally less during evening hours. You should call your electricity provider and determine if this is true in your area. :)

Also, 8-10 hours should be fine. I don't know of anyone who runs it 24 hours. Good luck! :)

We have an inground 16' x 32' pool, we run our filter twice a day for four hours at a time, 7:30am to 11:30am and 8:30pm to 12:30am. Why those hours, we avoid the 'peak' electricity rates during the heat of the day.

Supposedly you need to turn the water over once a day in the pool, with our filter/pump it's more like 5x a day. But I have noticed that if I cut back anymore on the time during the season the water can turn really quickly.

I am not sure why my DH thought it had to run all the time. I will check and see if the rate are less at night. We have had smaller pools in the past but it just feels like so much water to filter (I think it is the 16 X 32 or 36 foot and dug out to over 6 feet at one end) It has a really good sand pump so we will give the 8 hours a try and see if it stays clean. We can adjust as neccessary. I am just go delighted to hear that it does not have to run all the time.

Thank you everyone. We only get to use it for a few short months around here so every minute counts :lmao:

We run our pool pump at tleast 12 hours a day to keep it crystal clean. It is a lot easier (less expensive) to keep it clean then to pay for so many chemicals to get it re-balanced.
