Rules for cancelling a ressie

Okay - I'm still new at this and not sure where to get the clearest info on this...

Our first DVC trip will hopefully be Dec 2010. That said, there is a chance that I will be pregnant and unable to travel in December, if that is the case, we would want to go in September 2010. We have 160 points we HAVE to use in 2010 with a Feb UY.

So - can i book a Sept ressie and eventually a december ressie and cancel one of them and not loose any points? I realize I probably need to cancel some X days out but not exactly sure how many days that is...the Dec trip will be in the final 4 months of the UY so I know there are extra rules for that!

Let me see if I get what you are saying.

You have a Feb UY.

You plan to make two reservations, one in Sept 2010 and one in Dec 2010. You know for sure that the Sept 2010 reservation will not be cancelled at this time. You're not sure about the Dec one.

With a Feb UY, you must bank your points by the end of Sept, so you'd have to cancel the Dec 2010 reservation before Sept 30 2010 in order to use those points past Feb 1, 2011.

If you canceled the Dec 2010 reservation after Sept 30, 2010, you'd have to use those points by Jan 31, 2011 or you would lose them.

If you wanted to use them outside of DVC, like at a resort close to your home, you'd have to book no later than Sept 30, 2010. That's part of the Rule of Four - you can't book outside of DVC during the last four months of your UY for a reservation during that same time period.

Now, if you cancel the Dec 2010 reservation 30 days or less from the start of the reservation, your points go into Holding. You'd have to use those by Jan 31, 2011 AND make the reservation 60 days or less out from the start of the reservation. As long as you cancel the Dec 2010 reservation by Sept 30, 2010, you could still bank the points and use them in you Feb 2011 UY (Feb 1, 2011 through Jan 31, 2012).

Yes, at least 31 days before the start of the reservation.

Remember, too, that you have to look at the UY of the points. You can only bank points once. So, Feb 2008 points (current year points as of Feb 1, 2008 and good until Jan 31, 2009 unless banked) could only be banked and used up to Jan 2010.

Also, if you borrow any points, you cannot un-borrow them. They can't go back into the year they were borrowed from. They assume the year that they were borrowed into.

Yes, but make sure you use all of the banked points for the reservation you keep. You won't be able to bank the points from 2009 again.

So if you use the banked points from 2009 for the September reservation and cancel it, make sure to ask MS to reallocate the points so that you use the banked points for the December reservation. Then you will have current use year points (from 2010) in your account and can bank those.

Thanks soooo much!! I didnt know that the reallocation wouldnt be automatic! Thats a really important tip!!

Really - I dont know what I would do without you guys! I have read all of our documents in some painful details this month before signing but never would have realized I needed to ask for my points to be reallocated!!

I'm trying to understand this - if today I decide to borrow from Dec 2010 UY for a trip in April, but then change and book a resort room instead, do those points have to be used in 2009 (the year they were moved) or 2010 (the year they were supposed to be used)? Thanks.

You would have to use those borrowed points before the start of the UY that they were borrowed from. So if you borrow them from Dec 2010 UY, you must use them by Nov 30, 2010.
