Just wanted to give you guys looking for a place in Windsor Hills that some of the people that are out there renting are rude if you ask more than a few questions!!

I had narrowed down to 22 places, then down to 9, and I sent those 9 each the same questions, questions I mostly got from reading on here, very good questions and things anyone renting for a week and spending hard earned money would want to know.

When I told the person I had chosen another route, their answer was somewhat surprising! :confused3

Here is the response

"OK, think that is for the best, its only hiring a home for a few days not buying it."

Am I crazy to be offended at that response???

I hope that only one person responded like this. Thank goodness you didnt rent that place. Imagine if there was a problem :scared1: I shudder to think about the level of co-operation you would have had from them to resolve it .....!!!

Crazy? No. On the other hand, life is pretty short to let a small comment like that bother you much.

Didn't bother, actually helped me narrow down 1 more really quickly!! And yes, what if I had rented and there was a problem, prolly wouldn't have been taken care of!

Yeah, I'd be somewhat offended too. But more than that I'd be grateful I didn't go that route :).

Your comment struck a nerve with me because I have been on both sides of this, and I've learned that customer service is very hard work, and psychology plays a huge role in buying and selling.

Perhaps the home owner spent weeks polishing his home into the perfect rental -- a huge source of pride for him. Now here you come along with your long list of questions. If the house wasn't perfect as a rental, the owner would never have offered it as one. Your questions are nothing more than an attack on the rental owner's character!

When dealing with people renting their homes, selling things on ebay or at yard sales or on Craig's List, you have to remember than many of these people are not trained in customer service. They are also likely to be a lot more invested in the item offered than a clerk at the store. When you ask lots of questions, they may feel as if you are attacking them, and they may lash out.

Just remember, you've never met the rental owner and he has never met you, so why should what either of you say or offend the other?

im getting offers from windsor hills website about 20 came in and believe me...wasn't hard to narrow, some responses were not pleasant at all...i was just reading their website and asked no additional questions and some sites are yelling about CLEANING CHARGE AND NO REFUND ON DEPOSIT AND WOW... they were pretty easy to pick out the friendlier quotes..asking pls stay at our home, we would love to have you as our guest,,,these were very nice and i would remember them in the future...that op's persons quote would be unprofessional i hope it wasn't the owner...

Sounds more like a cultural thing than an insult. The responder sounds British and I suspect they are not as chatty as we are on this side of the pond.

That may just be an impression as we had many marvelous conversations with the locals when we were in Great Britain a few years ago.

I don't think that just because something is in capitals that it can be considered "yelling". That may be the case in chat rooms but on rental information and contracts it's considered 'making sure you know that there is a cleaning charge and no refund on the deposit'. A lot of people seem to skip over some of these conditions when reading this information. They put a deposit on a home and then change their mind and want their deposit back not remembering that it said no refund. Maybe those owners have had problems with people questioning 'how come there's a cleaning charge in my total', so they just want to make sure up front that you realize these conditions are there. I'm glad they do this. For example on the rental contract that I have just signed one of the "rules" about the pool is stated:
GLASS IS NOT PERMITTED IN THE POOL AREA.
It's nothing to be offended about, it just the owners way of saying "make sure you read this".
If you were talking to him/her in person he/she would probably say it this way: "I just want to emphasize that you can't have glass in the pool area because you can't see broken glass if it's on the bottom of the pool or on the deck."

I think that if I were the owner, I would think it was nice of you to let me know that you have chosen another property, if politely written. All properties are not suitable for all people, its not a one size fits all solution. It is important that for your vacation you have the perfect situation, and I wouldn't be offended in the least. As far as asking questions, owners should be more aware that this will occur in the economy we are all experiencing right now, even globally. It is your right as the customer to ask questions, and when I am looking to book from an owner, I am carefully evaluating their responses to my questions.

I agree with Wanda on this, nicely stated. Owners are trusting you as well to rent their expensive homes, it is a mutual contract, both sides must be protected. In a dispute, the Terms and Conditions will be the law, and this is best practices to have informed consent. Thanks for posting.

I've been on both sides of this as well. Owners receive hundreds of inquiries a week. It's not easy answering all the questions only to be told "No Thank you". I also understand as a renter you do need to know certain things about the place. I guess it depends on the kind of questions you asked.

Wanda I can not agree more.

Many may look at this as quite rude but it is put this way to bring attention to it.

It might have been put together better. I agree.

I also think it was very nice of you to answer all that you had written to.

I think some of those responses are just plain rude too. I got more than one response last time I inquired stating "Sorry, but we only rent from Saturday to Saturday." Well my dates were Saturday to Saturday. It was for a 2 week period so maybe that threw them off. :confused3 If they can't even figure that out, then I'm not going to rent from them.

I'm glad there are more friendly responses than rude ones.

i had rude responses from Windsor Hills too. i was just doing the regular inquiry about availability, no additional questions, etc. some of the people were just rude.

The Disboards have some of the most patient, helpful people on any board I've been on, and I've been on a LOT ever since pre-web USENET days. Yet in your search from hundreds to 22 to 9 it appears that you've managed to try even their patience (see the "Please Help Me" thread if you aren't sure what I'm referring to). I'm not at all surprised that in the course of your research assignment some of the homeowners got sick of you. Of course people rent out homes because they want the money but there comes a point where the money isn't worth it.

And THAT has to be one of the rudest responses I've seen on these boards. The OP is new to the boards, has only posted 14 times on a variety of subjects, asked a few questions, and from what I can see on the thread you referenced nobody was "sick of" the OP. They simply said the OP should make the final decision, that nobody else could make that individual choice.

That's your opinion, which is worth about as much as mine. He's looking to rent a house for a week, not find the next American Idol. If it was me answering his questions I'd have told him "sorry, the house has already been rented for that week" after round 2 or 3 or 4. I can fully understand some non-professional folks losing their cool.
