rude or not?

-An apartment complex of 10 units

-2 coin operated washer/dryers

Is it rude for one person to use both washers and dryers at the same time and other people have to wait?
Or is it okay since they were both empty when person went down there/ first come first serve?

opinions please!

If they were both empty, they are both free to be used.

First come, first served. Not rude at all.

Not rude at all. We did that when we did laundry in the apt. complex, all the residents did that. What I found rude was when someone else took my stuff out of the laundry (washer or dryer) and just put it on the counter. I don't want others pawing my laundry!!

First come, first serve. I'm not going to do half of my laundry and leave the other washer empty on the chance that someone else _MIGHT_ come along and want to use it. Maybe nobody else will want to use it that night, then I've just doubled the time my laundry takes for nothing.

Hopefully, you were also polite enough to wash and go. Most of us in our old complex were very coureteous abotu this, but we did have 1 or two that felt it was ok to monopolize the washers or dryers and just come back for them when they felt like it....4-6 hours later. Those people found there stuff laid out on the table.

using them... not rude

Leaving clothes in them after load is finished... rude

I would guess that with that few machines you guys would need a "community culture" on how you determine who uses them next. If the original user has multiple loads, then it gets sticky. Maybe there should be a sign up board or something because then the next user would have to sit and wait for the machines to finish in case a third party shows up. Might be easier to go to the laundromat if you have transportation, get all your loads done at once.

I am thinking of the scenario where one person uses both washers, transfers that laundry to the dryer and then refills the washers again. It would be inconsiderate if they monopolize all the machines for several hours. Especially on a weekend when other people are home and waiting do to laundry.

Even then, not rude. That is just the way it works when you live in an apartment complex.

If I have more than a few loads I go to the laundrymat much faster, besides it gives me a few minutes to sit and read. At home I try not to use more than two machines, our complex is large but we do have a few rooms for the laundry. Your not being rude, you could wait all day by only doing one load at a time. Jo

Nope, I wasn't one of those who started stuff and then left. If I was doing laundry I was home and wasn't planning to leave until it was all done. What I'm referring to is realizing I'd missed our finish time by maybe 15-30 minutes, running over to take care of it and either my wet stuff was on the counter dripping everywhere and still wet or my dry stuff was removed from the dryer and placed on the counter. If you're taking it out of the washer then put it in the dryer, you don't have to pay for it but if you can't wait for 15-30 minutes then at least put it in the dryer instead of on the dirty counter. As for the dry stuff, put it in the laundry basket that I left in there, that's why it's there, please do not put my clean dry clothes on a dirty counter and please do not touch my clothes. I never left my stuff in the laundry room, altho others did.

In my campus housing, if you left your laundry for more than 10-15 minutes after it was finished someone would move it. No one would have waited 30 minutes before clearing out the machine. And personally I'd be annoyed if someone put my laundry into a dryer, since there are quite a few things I don't dry. I'd be afraid that someone else would check the dryer to see if they could take my laundry out, and upon finding it wet they'd try to be a good samaritan and start the dryer for me. I'd much rather someone put my laundry into my basket or at least onto a clean surface. But I used to set a timer so I wouldn't leave my laundry too long, so it wasn't an issue. Maybe all shared laundry areas ought to have stated rules so everyone there has the same expectations for situations like that.

If you don't want anyone else touching your laundry, then you need to be there BEFORE the wash cycle ends so you can remove your wet clothes and put them into the dryer yourself. To expect someone to stand there and wait 15-30 minutes for you to show up and move your clothes is rude. If you go back to your apartment, set your kitchen timer so you'll be back down to the laundry room BEFORE the washer stops. Then nobody will touch your clothes.

If no one else is waiting, then not rude, if someone else is, then yes it is rude. What would be worst, is if you failed to remove the items from the washer or dryer and Know others need to use them:mad:

But, I guess I won't have that problem since we are staying at the BWV this Nov:woohoo:

then get your butt down there to move it yourself. I will not wait on anyone to come move their stuff.

Who knows if they are going to be back in 10 minutes (still more time that I want to waste) or 4 hours.

Of course I've had my own w/d for at least 25 years. I guess WDW is the only time I use a laundry room. I have a w/d in my condo, but probably half the people here didn't opt for one. We have a laundry room but I've never used it. I was tempted last week when I must have had 10-12 load to wash (tiny washer).

that's a tough one. I guess it depends on what's being washed. If all the loads were jam packed full than not rude, but if she could have combined her loads and left a free washer then it was rude.

I mean technically it is first come first served...but I try to think of others. When I was in college it was near impossible to get laundry done in my dorm. I would wash absolutely everything together since they were huge washers/dryers. Then I would watch other people take up like three washers putting a handful of underwear in one, 4 shirts in another, and like 3 towels in another. I thought that was rude.

I agree with this. And just how dirty could the counter be, really?

If you live there and it is that dirty take some 409 with you and wipe it off for heavens sake!

We always took peoples stuff out of the washer or dryer and put it on the counter. I would not put stuff in a basket either because how do I know that is your basket for sure. On the counter you can see it and do whatever you want with it.

So here's the kicker!!

I agree, it's not rude to use both washers at the same time. My boyfriend was annoyed (he's so impatient), I told him he was silly and then I asked on here and I showed him that indeed, I was right, he is silly.:rotfl: (he wasn't really mad, just a moment in time today)

But......... it turns out that the person who was using both washers and dryers at the same time was someone who USED to live here!!! She moved out almost a year ago, but kept the outside door key and still comes here to do her laundry instead of a laundry-mat! Isn't that crazy???? I just looked at her when she was in the basement telling me this....

In this situation, I'm pretty annoyed!!:rotfl:

Public washer/dryer means first come, first serve.

Rude is leaving your clothes in the washer/dryer for most of the day when the cycle is done.

I agree - and I think 5 minutes is plenty of time before removing someone's clothes. It's not rude to use a machine, but it is very rude to monopolize a machine that is not in use and could be used by other people.

However, I do also agree that it is very rude to use any machine where you are not an authorized user! I'd report her. She is rude and basically a thief, entering illegally and using a perk that does not belong to her.
