Just read in guidebook that the self-parking @ RPR is 'far flung' mostly behind the convention center??

*How far is far;) ? Thought the parking @ HRH was a long hike; is RPR's even worse?

*Know self-parking is $12/day; how much is valet?

:)

The walk isnt too bad. I would say 5 minutes at the most.

I have a related question. I've stayed at the HRH and found the lack of parking spots deplorable. I have the RPH booked for August. Is this just as bad? Should I switch to PBH?

When I wat at RPR in Ocotber there were plenty of spaces and we arrived rather late. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If you where parking by the convention center ,you would have a bit of a walk.
When we stayed last June 28th to 5th July, we parked in the main car park just in front of the hotel, for a holiday time there was loads of room, and never had a problem finding space, and it was only a couple of minutes from the entrance

gotcha - not sure why i was thinking the main lot was behind the convention center (that's what DHs are for:rolleyes1 ; bless his soul;) ).

I just saw this post. We are booked at RPR for 3 nights and did not know they charged for parking...WHY so much?? That seems outrageous and it is more than parking at the parks!!! Is there anyway around this or a way to get a discount? It just doesn't seem right!!

Besides taking a taxi or getting dropped off the only way I can think of is telling them that you got dropped off when you checking in and hope to god that they dont ticket or tow your car while your there :rotfl2:

I meant seeing as how I am a VIP and everything they'd wave the cost or give me some kind of discount...

OK, just returned from RPR today.

PARKING IS HORRIFIC!!! We stayed Sat & Sun night. $12/day to self park. $18 to valet. They add the cost to your bill. The self park lot is close - only a few minutes to walk.

You pretty much have to valet because we circled the self-park lot for almost 30 min. It is absolutely ridiculous.

we have stayed at RPR during the HHN event that goes on in October and have never had a problem finding an empty spot in the main parking lot by the front entrance of the hotel, much less have to wait 30min. we've normally found a parking right away when we get there. We have been going for the past 4 yrs in Oct. for HHN and like I said have never found a problem finding parking spaces.:goodvibes

You have to look at it another way. At Disney, the parking price is added into your room price. If you aren't parking, would it seem right to have to pay this added cost anyways?

If parking space is limited, hotels tend to charge for it upfront to try and discourage people from bringing a vehicle.

Here is an overhead picture of Universal and IOA and the resorts for you to move around and look at the parking.

USO does not offer a Magical Express type of option so if anything they should be including parking in their price and Disney should be adding it. IMO, adding parking is walking a fine line. I guess I should read the fine print to see if they are charging me extra to use the pool, I know not everyone likes to swim...

We stayed and self parked at RPR when Wilma came through when most of south Florida was mandatory evacuation and found a place to park. We moved to HRH and they had mandatory valet at no charge because it was so crazy. HRH is the worst for parking and they even bus their employees in.

Just got back from RPR (25-28) and the parking lot was only a few minutes walk from the main entrance. We didn't have any problems finding spots.

Does Disney give you free unlimited express passes to every ride when you stay onsite? Does Disney give you a rewards program that entitles you to free upgrades including suites? Does Disney offer a two year annual pass for $189 renewable at $99/year? Does Disney offer you a 7 day pass for $87? Can you stay at a deluxe hotel for $149 at Disney World?

Walt Disney World charges you an extra $10 to be dropped off by taxi at the parks to try to make people stay onsite. I've been charged. Universal lets you be dropped off for nothing.

If those things don't more than make up for the parking fee, then I don't think anything can satisfy you. There are many other hotels in the Universal area an dbeyond that also charge for parking. Swan and Dolphin, Renaissance Hotel at Seaworld, Nickelodeon Hotel, Gaylord Palms, World Center Marriott, Crowne Plaza are just a few. Disneyland also charges a resort fee as they are in a similar limited parking area. I don't hear any complaints about it and their rooms are much more expensive than Universal's.

The Loews parking fee isn't going to change but Universal itself does a great job in more than making up for it.

All I am saying is that hotel should NOT be charging for parking. I am not trying to compare what features you get with your stay and I am certainly not trying to compare to Disney. To say it is "baked" into the price is ridiculous you can say that about anything the hotel offers. And if you are gonna charge a fee it should be resaonable. $12/18 a day is outrageous. It is more than the parking at the parks!! I would be just as upset if I found out I had to pay for the use of the pool. I'd expect to pay for parking in NYC or Chicago. Not in Central FL. It is a classic "hidden fee" and I don't like it. Now I am possibly changing my plans about renting a car because of this extra hidden expense.

Most hotels with parking shortages will charge for parking. It is not limited to NYC or Chicago. Many other Orlando hotels do the same thing. Disney has a ton of space to be able to have free parking. Swan and Dolphin have no space and they charge.

The charge is there to try and discourage you from having a car. If you are changing your mind about a rental car, then the charge has done its job.

There is a ton of parking at the parks, so that would be why that cost is lower. Once you get to the hotels, you will see why parking is a premium. Universal hotels are located right in the middle of an area where they cannot stretch out. There just isn't any more space. Although they are in central Florida, they are also squashed into an area surrounded by highways, houses, high schools and other hotels.

Some people seem to think that jacking up the prices to hide the parking fee would be a good idea but others like the fact that if they don't park, they don't pay.

Universal hotels are great value even with the parking fee. All of the deluxe hotels at Disney are more than $12/night more expensive than the Universal hotels.

Have a great vacation and try not to let it bother you. Focus on all the extras you are getting without having to pay for them, like the express passes.

Self parking was a nightmare when we stayed at RPR in May. Whether we arrived early or late, there were no decent spots to be had =(
