Royal Castle Neuschwanstein
Neuschwanstein Castle (German: Schloss Neuschwanstein, lit. New Swan Stone palace; pronounced [nɔʏˈʃvaːnʃtaɪ̯n]) is a 19th-century Bavarian palace on a rugged hill near Hohenschwangau and Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as an homage to Richard Wagner, the King's inspiring muse. Although public photography of the interior is not permitted, it is the most photographed building in Germany and is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.

Ludwig did not allow visitors to his castles, but after his death in 1886 the castle was opened to the public. Since that time, over 50 million people have visited the Neuschwanstein Castle. About 1.3 million people visit annually, with up to 6,000 per day in the summer. The palace has appeared in several movies, and was the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's Castle at Disneyland Park and for the Cinderella's Castle at the Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland.

Being of German heritage, I especially enjoy this. Travelled to Germany a couple times myself but never paid a visit to this castle.

Oooooh I've been there a few times  It's absolutely stunning in person and the view from there is BREATHTAKING!

I'd give anything to go just once more :guilty:

We have been twice, it is a gorgeous area. I do plan to go again one day. :)

I have never been to Germany but IF and WHEN I go, I would love to tour this Castle. ::yes::

I did not realize that the Royal Castle was Walt's inspiration for the Castles in the WORLD and the LAND. :goodvibes

Wow and so many DISer's have been there...fabulous!!! :thumbsup2

Oooooh I want to go there! That place looks gorgeous. Was this the COL bro, Kar?

I do have a sister nearby in Belgium we could crash with.... Who's up for a road/plane trip??

It is a beautiful castle. We visited many times when we lived in Germany. In fact we were just showing pictures of one of our trips there to DD this evening.

I far prefer Schloss Linderhof, which is quite small but has amazing outbuildlings including the Venus Grotto. I often go there for an early morning walk.

It is one of three of King Ludwig's castles, and if one is not going with a tour I think it is a much better option. Far fewer crowds. And actually I never see non-Europeans there. It is on a side road 10km from the painted town of Oberammergau, and about 30 minutes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Neuschwanstein and the surrounding town has become very touristy, and can be very crowded with long waits. Conversely, Linderhof has fewer waits and smaller crowds. Traffic also gets quite bad in that area; I was there a few weeks ago as I decided to take a quick detour on my way from the Tirol. It was a zoo on an autumn Sunday, and a bad accident happened as well.

(On a slightly political note, it can be overwhelming to consider the amount of money spent on Linderhof, Neuschwanstein, and Herrenchiemsee - not to mention churches like the Wies - when the peasants were starving. Quite the dichotomy and something I encourage people to consider and learn about along with all that beauty)

So do enjoy if you go, but if you want to see something really special and different, consider Linderhof.

I've been to Schloss Linderhof several times as well. It is a very lovely palace. :thumbsup2 It isn't as awe-inspiring as Neuschwanstein IMO, but it is much more accessible and is completely charming. I love wandering around the grounds.

I enjoyed Oberammergau as well. :)

Maybe it is the difference in being a visitor, but I have never been able to get past the opulence of Neuschwanstein and what was happening to the ordinary people. I feel the same about Versailles. I cannot really enjoy it just for the beauty, knowing the history of the region and the people. Think of the current bailout plans and imagine if they were supporting those castles and the more that were planned!

I can only take it in small amounts, hence why I like Linderhof. I haven't been inside the castle in years, but do enjoy the Venus Grotto.

I've been to Linderhoff & Herrenchiemsee, but never Neuschwanstein. I would love to visit it. :)

(Been to Oberammergau, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and would love to go back, and even more, would love to return to Ramsau)

I like to admire places with questionable histories simply for their beauty and architecture. I always feel that a building is not responsible for what goes on around it, just those that once lived there and are thankfully gone.

Anyway, I would love to see this castle and so many others!

How fun. DH (my B) just switched jobs within the Army and his new team goes to Germany on biz sometimes. He already asked me if I wanted to go and after my sister found that out she told me I had BETTER come with him. That flight scares me. :scared1: Come with me and we can be FOF buddies. While we're in Europe we have to stop in London to see my brother too. :thumbsup2

Turkey Day will be fab - we are FLYING to see Mickey. Shhhh - don't tell the kiddos. They don't know that we leave in just 35 hours.

Bavaria - I love the pix you posted. How far are those locations from the other castle?
