Edited (4/20/07) post to add Royal Canin recall info: http://www.royalcanin.us/

----------------------

I apologize if this has already been posted; I did a search and scrolled back 4 pages but that doesn't mean I didn't miss it.

Here are the details: http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/

Obviously this is disheartening as Natural Balance is a HIGH quality food and seemingly reputable company. The cause is unknown still, which means more foods could be affected in the future if a common distributor is found.

I have a friend in Houston who has 3 dogs in renal failure right now due to the food. They may not make it...

Discontinue use of the Venison formulas immediately. I would even reconsider feeding NB other varieties for now until more is known.

New article from USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/money/industries/2007-04-17-premium-pet-food-recalled_N.htm?csp=34

**note - Diamond foods also makes Chicken Soup and Kirkland. I may be switching foods now; Diamond has had issues twice in about a year. I have to think through it all for awhile**

Article c&p:

Natural Balance Pet Foods said Tuesday it found melamine in two of its pet food products, which the company has recalled.
Melamine is the chemical suspected of causing pet deaths and illnesses related to the Menu Foods recall, covering more than 60 million cans and pouches of wet dog and cat food from dozens of brands the past four weeks.

But Natural Balance doesn't use wheat gluten, the ingredient contaminated with melamine in the Menu recall. Instead, it suspects that melamine was in a rice protein concentrate, a new ingredient used in the dry foods, said Natural Balance president Joey Herrick. "That was the only change in the product," he says.

The concentrate is now being tested, he added. Melamine was detected in samples of the food. The recalled foods are: Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Foods.

Whether other pet food makers got the same rice protein concentrate is unclear at this time. Herrick says the food was made for Natural Balance by Diamond Pet Foods.

Diamond Pet Food makes no other food that includes rice protein concentrate, spokesman Jim Fallon says.

Herrick also said Diamond got the rice protein concentrate from an American company, which he wouldn't name. The melamine in the Menu Foods recall was in wheat gluten imported from China.

The company has recalled all dates of the two products, although Herrick says it has only received complaints for food made March 28.

Herrick says Natural Balance, a premium pet food maker based in California, started getting calls Thursday from consumers reporting that dogs were vomiting. By Friday, the company had received calls from seven households regarding 11 dogs, Herrick said. The company also says it has received reports of animals suffering kidney problems, which has also occurred in the Menu recall.

The consumer calls set off alarms because "we don't get that," Herrick said.

The company has also received reports involving three or four cats, he said.

Natural sent out the food Friday to be tested for the usual things that would cause animals to vomit, such as pesticides and heavy metals, Herrick says.

No animals had yet died but that the company had reports that some were hospitalized, he said.

Melamine is not allowed in human or pet food. It is an industrial chemical used in plastics making in the USA and as a fertilizer in Asia, the Food and Drug Administration says. While melamine is not highly toxic, the FDA is investigating whether it, or something related to it, is responsible for pet deaths in the Menu recall.

Thanks for posting this...we feed Natural Balance, luckily not the venison variety. I've been checking the NB website every couple of days. Will be checking it daily now.

AHHHHH - of course THIS is the food I switched too. I should have just stuck with the dry Iams (which hasn't been recalled) but I was influenced by the 'it is a poor quality food' arguments.

Thankfully we aren't using the venison formulas. My cats were so upset when I switched their food when this mess all started. Of course now I feel I need to switch back!

Geez, I thought my paranoia could end! Fortunately, my pets' food still isn't on any lists...

Heard a vet interviewed & she said that as long as the food/treat doesn't contain wheat gluten it should be OK.

My cats eat NB, but they do not eat that particular brand. I am assuming by the website, it's safe to continue feeding them this.

This is not related to the other recall - Natural Balance does not use wheat in their food. This is a new recall, cause unknown.

Thanks for posting this. we've been using Nat Balance for a copule years now,, not the venison type.

Who knows if the other types are affected. We're almost out of dog food, hard to know what to buy these days.

herc.

This is getting crazy....I've become the wheat gluten nazi...now what the heck am I looking for!!! :confused3

The dogs are on Diamond Naturals which for the price is pretty good food IMO, and I just got the cats Blue Buffalo dry food, but they are not happy and are looking at me for their 9 Lives!! I tell them that's better food, but they don't believe me.

When the recall started I tried some NB canned food for the cats but they ran out a week or so ago and I haven't gotten back across town to get them some more....I didn't buy the venison kind anyway, so I guess that was a good thing...but who the heck knows anymore...

Oh no, of course this is what I switched to 'cause it was such high quality and no wheat. And, interestingly, I fed my dog one of the venison & brown rice and he wouldn't eat it, kept putting it in is mouth and spitting it out. I just thought he didn't like venison 'cause he had never had it...I threw most of it out but he did eat some of it. He's ok though. It was kind of funny 'cause we have a lot of deer wander through our yard and I said to DH, I guess Macduff won't be attacking a deer in the yard anytime soon!

I'll have to keep on top of this one too! Thanks to the OP for posting! I learn everything on the DIS!

Whew! I just ran to check the food we switched our dogs to. I knew it was Nature-something; thankfully it's Nature's Recipe, not Natural Balance.

Michelle, you aren't the only wheat gluten nazi ... DW MeanLaureen is also. They were eating Pedigree dry, which hadn't been affected at all, but we didn't want to take any chances.

Natural Balance has their ingredients on their website and it doesn't show any wheat gluten -- or any wheat products -- at all in their products. I hope they find what the problem is soon.

Seriously, this is making me crazy!!!!!!!!!!

The dogs may just start getting the "emergency rations" they get when we forget they're low on food! (Boiled hamburger & rice - which they love). THEY'D be happy - my grocery bill wouldn't! And the cat would be thrilled with tuna 24/7, but sheesh!

Why can't someone create a "these foods are safe" list? At this rate, it'd be shorter!

We had to have our dog put to sleep about a week ago. He got very sick, very suddenly. He was not on any of the "official" recalled foods, but I thought at the time that this is not over yet. The vet said she thought the same thing.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. There have been way too many!
Not that we can be sure of a direct connection, but do you mind telling us what was he eating?

He was eating Science Diet Senior Light dry food, and Pedigree Choice Cuts in Sauce canned food.

That's it. I'm going to start BARFing Chloe again.

She's on EVO - RM right now and so far so good, but this is getting ridiculous.

Let me know if there is anything I can do for your Houston friends. That is so sad. :sad2:

Pittypat, is that the Science Diet Perscription Diet foot, as in Hill's? My old lab has been slowing down more and more, she can barely walk up the hill and back. I was thinking old age, but now I'm wondering....

I switched my dog to Natural Balance Premium over a month ago because I thought it was a better food for her. I even stopped with the Pedigree in the morning because of the wheat gluten. Last Monday she got very lethargic(she's a hyper Corgi so very not like her) and started panting and shaking. I took her to the vet and they suspected her pancreas so they put her on antibiotics and gave her fluids because she was very dehydrated. Her tests for the pancreas, liver and kidneys were all fine, but her white blood cell count was up. The fluids papped her right up,but by Tuesday morning she was lethargic again and threw up 5 times. The poor thing would get a little water and it would come right back up. By that evening she was eating pedialyte slushies and a little rice from my hand. It wasn't until Wed. afternoon that she really was her old self.
Interestingly enough she will not eat her Natural Balance dry food now. I opened the new bag a few days ago.
The OP comment about the dogs in Houston worries me. We live outside of Houston and the first bag was bought from the Petco in Clear Lake. This last bag I ordered.

Cindyluwho-yes it is Hill's SD. But I don't want to start some sort of rumor or panic here about that food. Maybe it was something else entirely. It's just that DH and I have been torturing ourselves with questions about did we miss something? Were there symptoms we should've seen? Could we have done something to save him? And, naturally, with all the food scares, that is the first thing I thought of.

Great, just great. I normally feed my cats the Venison & Green Pea formula. Actually they finished the last bag I bought them about 2 - 3 weeks ago. I couldn't even tell you the date on the bag as I empty the bags into a tin can and throw the bag away. They actually are eating Science Diet Hairball formula mixed with Blue Spa indoor formula now. The only reason I bought the Blue Spa instead of Natural Balance is because Petsmart (Blue Spa) was on my way home and Petco(Natural Balance) wasn't.My Siamese has a terrible hairball problem and I am trying different brands to see what will work. That's the only reason to mix in the Science Diet. Other than that, I was using strictly Venison & Green Pea.

I haven't noticed any problems with my 2 cats, but now am worried to death!!! How soon do people notice problems????

Does anyone have any advice other than keeping a close eye on my furbabies? Like I said, they are acting totally normal. I hope they stay that way.
