Royal Canin now included in recall-Natural Balance Dog/Cat Food RECALL

We recently started feeding out babies both dry & wet food in an attempt to help our fatty cat (17 pounds of stupid) lose some weight. I had a real scare when some of the wet food we had tried on them was on the original recall list. I've since started to buy all their pet food at a small boutique style pet food store. They have really liked the Merrick wet food we've bought. I put that on their plates and they gobble it up.

I bought the thanksgiving day turkey meal and my older cat thought it was ok, but the younger one acted as if it were poison.

This story freaked me out.

I have a 1 year old dog who had a kidney infection after her spaying last summer, so she already has impaired kidney function (she recovered and seems healthy now, but they don't know how much permanent damage was done). She also has allergy issues so I just switched her to Natural Balance a few weeks ago when our local store started carrying it and they were sold out of her regular food. Of course, DH and I stood there looking at all the varieties and ended up coming home with Venison and Brown Rice.

When it was recalled, I was in shock. We just switched (from Royal Canin) and we just happened to pick the one kind that was recalled to feed to a dog that already has kidney issues! We went to the store that night and exchanged it - I ended up getting another kind of Natural Balance (Sweet Potato & Fish) because they were still out of her other food, so I really hope they're right about no other kinds being affected.

The only good thing is that she seems fine - very active, no vomiting. She was at the vet 2 weeks ago for shots and annual exam - we just happpened to recheck her kidney values at that appointment, and they were better than they had been since before she was spayed. She was also back at the vet a week later because she had developed a lump a her vaccine site, and she still weighed exactly the same.

I'm not sure if this has been posted or not, but I just got an automatic email from the FDA, saying that all Royal Canin dry food with rice protein has been recalled.

For those that are interested, howl911.com has really great links to all the info. This issue is becoming very alarming and I'm willing to bet that we have a long way to go before it is over. I wouldn't be surprised if we find the contamination has leaked into the human food chain. I don't understand why the gov't isn't doing more about this. There are barely mentions on the news anymore. Where is Homeland security? If our food processing plants are this vulnerable....we're in deep $--+.

I bought Solid Gold Katz n Flocken dry last night for kitty. Now I don't know if I should even trust that product. I called the company yesterday and spoke with a rep that said they do not use any grains and are not part of any recall. I just don't know what to do or who to trust anymore.:sad1:

I've been feeding her some of the leftover IAMS dry trying to stretch it out along with boiled chicken. I'm afraid to feed her anything new or a new batch of IAMS dry.

I am using Solid Gold Barking at the Moon for our pup and Katz n Flocken for kitty. I am trusting this brand more than others and just watch their website about every other day to keep up on their company news releases. I'm sticking with them.

That's good to know. Elizabeth was very responsive to my questions yesterday when I called the company. I am hoping that they are on the up and up.
