Can anyone here help me with this...I have had my computer hooked up to a router so my moms computer can be hooked up to my cable modem. It was going fine for a year and a half and now I am getting this message on my moms computer....."The system has detected a conflict for IP address 192.xxx.x.xxx with the system having hardware address 00:08:xx:xx:xx:xx" the x's are number but I am not sure if I am supposed to post them LOL..... And now she can't get online at all....before this occasionally there would be a pop up that said "there is a IP conflict with another user using this address" but at least she would be able to setill get online with that one....
Thanks!!

Try this, shut everything down. Unplug the router, the cable modem and the ethernet cable. Wait a good couple of minutes. Reattach the cables, start the main computer first and then try your mom's once your's is up and running. Cable modems have a "lease" on an IP number and sometimes that lease "runs out". By undoing everything adn starting over, you force the modem to ask for a new lease and that clears things up. HTH!

Well that helped halfway thanks....I can now get online with her computer but that message keeps popping up every 10 seconds still.....

I'm not sure if I understand your configuration. Are both your and your mom's computer's connected to the router at the same time? If so, you need to make sure that both PCs are set to use dymanic addressing (DHCP). Exactly how you do this varies by your operating system version, but I'll give you the general Windows "flow" to get there. If you go into Control Panel, look for Network Connections. Open that and you should see your network connection listed. Right click on it and look for a list of protocols. You should see one labeled "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". Highlight that and click on the "Properties" button. You should see a new window with IP addressing options. If you see one that reads something like "Obtain an IP address automatically" and you're using that open, then you're all set with regard to DHCP.

If you're using DCHP, then try this: go to "start/run" and type "cmd". A black window will pop up. Type "ipconfig /release" and press enter. Next type "ipconfig /renew". This will fetch a new dynamic IP address from the router. When done, type "exit" and enter in the window and it will close.

You'll also want to make sure that DHCP is enabled on the router. You'll have to refer to the directions that came with your router.
