Router - packed or carry-on?

Simple question, I guess. Is it legal/OK to carry a router onto a plane, or does it have to be packed/checked?

As long as you don't intend to use it on the flight, carry it on. It's probably safer in your carry on bag instead of down in the baggage hold with heaven knows what on top of it...

We packed ours in the checked luggage in the box it came in: no problems!

We have packed in carry-on and in checked luggage. I actually prefer to carry all of my electronic stuff on board with me.

Perfectly legal in your carry on.

No problem carrying it on. I carry my Apple Airport Express Base Station (AAEBS) on the plane all the time and never even had it questioned.
