Rotten Corpse flower

:wave2: We are leaving tomorrow for WDW. Does anyone know where in AK the plant is located. We are planning on spending Sunday at the Ak. Thank You

So this doesn't do pollinization? how does it reproduce exactly? interesting thing, anyone know where this is native to? I would like to see it also, and I take it it is a big deal when these bloom, so what is the time scheme between bloomings? i dont know why this has peaked my interest, maybe because its so freaky looking! lol
The plant blooms for about 2 days. The bloom is also very rare, it can be many many years between blooms, sometimes even decades. Disney has 4 of the Titan Arum plants, and actually has a full time horticulturist who does nothing but care for these plants.

'Boneyard', Baloo?! :earseek:

I want to know too where in the AK this located...Maybe over by the bone yard!!!! :earboy2:

And you made me snort.
:rotfl2:

You better watch out or this is going to turn into a debate as to whether this plant is just too phallic for the pure and true of heart who frequent WDW. Perhaps a fig leaf is in order? :teeth:

If 1 is at Rafiki's Planet Watch, where are the other 3 located? Or all they all at that location? I don't remember ever noticing them before.:confused3

If you are there when it blooms, you must go and to see and smell it! It is quite an experience. We have had a couple of them bloom here in Madison at the University of Wisconsin and there were lines out the door! I bought a t-shirt last time for my DH and we call it the ... um .... the DIS won't let me say the word ... "blah-blah t-shirt" because of the shape of the spadix. I missed the last blooming ... I think I was out of town, but here is more information about the UW ones: http://www.news.wisc.edu/titanarum/ .

ETA: The flower is really, really big and can be over 8 feet tall! And yes, very, very stinky!

The plants are not kept on-stage. All four plants are kept at the WDW nursery. They only bring one out when it is ready to bloom.

I'm very curious about seeing this. I'm heading to WDW tomorrow, hopefully I will be able to catch it in bloom!

OMG! What a bizarre looking plant. We weren't planning to do AK on our trip but maybe this will change things a bit :confused3 Gross stuff appeals to our kids

So they only bring one out when they bloom?? So you might see one once every couple years? That's strange. What if they all bloom at once, do we get to see all 4?? :) I've never heard of this plant before...the things you learn on the disboards....

WE were just at the AK on Sunday. I could not find the flower so I asked a CM ( one who is a as we call them a Suit) and he said it had bloomed and it only lasts for about three days and then is collaspes, so it had been taken back to the nursery.

HOLY COW! :earseek:
I didn't know the DIS allowed such images on their site! We have children on this board!! :scared:

Okay, I confess I am a little disappointed to have missed it (we'll be there in 11 days - to miss it by a mere two weeks!) So I have a question - what is the natural habitat? (Yes, I could just do a simple search, but this is easier, plus I can just keep surfing the boards for a while.) It looks distinctly rainforest-ish. Wow, what a monster!

Darn it, and with an answer like that, the natural suspicion in me forced me to look it up myself anyway, LOL. (What a great Balderdash answer, by the way, I will file that one away for future use.) This is the correct answer - sigh, thanks for helping!

It is suprising that Disney didn't make such big news about the flower this year. Last time they had a bloom for this flower there was lots of news.
