Ok, this Southern girl needs to know if tartar sauce is available at R&C. It may just be an American thing, but I cannot eat fried fish without it.

Thanks!

I don't remember if it was available or not. But don't worry being a good Southern Boy I loved eating the fish with the malt vinegar they serve. It was really good.

You can rest easy. They do indeed have tartar sauce.

Yes, they do have tarter sauce...but try it at least ONCE without the Tarter and use the Malt Vinegar instead. It is SOOooo good. From one southern girl to another!

I promise to try it at least once. Thanks for the quick replies!!

Yes we British folk do know what tartar sauce is!! Funny I always thought it was so NOT an American thing, isn't that odd?

As for the vinegar thing, I have no idea what possesses people to put it on their chips...yuk!

That's funny because I thought it was just a New England thing. Can't have fried haddock without tartar sauce! LOL

Not laughing here. I was raised on tartar sauce. Don't you love living in the South!?!? ;)

Sorry folks but it is neither British or American, but French. Yummy it is too!

Well this thread had me really curious as to just where Tartar sauce originated but it's very hard to pin down. According to Wikipedia...the Romans used a sauce very similar to what we call Tartar sauce today but it wasn't until the invention of mayonnaise that modern Tartar sauce was in use. "The first step in dating modern tartar sauce is dating the origin of this recipe's major component: mayonnaise. There is some debate regarding the *invention* of mayonnaise but most food historians seem to agree that it happened in Europe sometime during the mid-eighteenth century. The most popular story attributes the invention of mayonnaise to Richelieu's chef who was commemorating the June 28, 1756 capture of the city of Mahon." Mahon was a Spanish colony caputered by the Kingdom of Great Britian in 1707. :confused3

Hey, the best chips I had were in Birmingham with malt vinegar on them! aaaahhhh

Just to let you know - the last time I was at Rose and Crown, this southern Bell sitting next to us decided to gag at her table (quite loudly I might add) when she smelled the Malt!

Just Promise me you will keep an open mind, ssdeverell!!!!!!!!

The Cod is wonderful, though but the chips are crap.
