Rosacea?

I developed facial redness about 2 1/2 years ago but felt it was just that my skin was sensitive. I was diagnosed by my primary care physician with rosacea last fall. Mine is pretty mild, but I can get very red. My doctor prescribed a topical antibiotic Cleocin-T (Clindamycin). It is working well for me at this point. My doctor told me this was a long-term treatment since the condition can't be cured, but it can be controlled. It is important to seek medical treatment since the condition typically gets progressively worse.

I use Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser to wash my face. I apply the cleanser to dry skin, massage and then rinse with barely warm water--hot water is bad for my face. I can't use benzyol peroxide or any alpha hydroxy acids on my face or they burn my skin. I use cetaphil cream and Eucerin Redness relief moisterizer (which has a sunscreen and a green tint to neutralize red). I also use the Bare Escentuals mineral makeup which I find very soothing. The foundation and Bisque concealer products cover redness amazingly well. Some cosmetic companies offer green makeup which will either neutralize red skin, or leave you looking like Kermit the Frog.

While you are waiting for your doctor's appointment, see if you can find your triggers. These are often hot beverages, alcohol, spicy foods, extremes in temperatures, and stress. Your goal is to try to minimize flushing as much as possible. People with Celtic, Germanic and Scandanavian heritage are prone to the condition. I wonder if it can be hereditary, since my dad was always very red-faced.

Do any of you also have an autoimmune disease or some sort of inflammatory disorder?

my dh has chrons disease, and this (roscea) is one of the possible complications from it. (but is is a mild livable one, so we don't complain, and his chrons has been quiet for almost 16 years now, every since he had a foot and a half of his small intestine removed :thumbsup2 )

I like Aveeno products. I will look into the cetaphil and maybe a drugstore for the Eucerine.

My face is very sensitive and so many washes leave my face tight and dry.

I used to use a prescription cream for my face, but I haven't since I found the Steiner [La Therapie](spa) products. They work so nice on my face to keep the redness at bay. I also get a facial when I cruise. That helps tremendously. I can see and feel the difference. The only problem is the products are expensive and we are on a strict budget right now.

I developed rosacea 2 years ago.....it was pretty bad then, and I took antibotics for about a month and also used Metrolotion. It cleared up pretty quickly. I have never again had it that bad, and I don't use the Metrolotion anymore. I do find that stress, alcohol, and hot or cold temperatures tend it make it flare up mildly. I do wash with either Dove soap or Basis Vitamin Bar, and I love the Aveeno Ultra Calming moisturizer, it really helps with the redness. I also wear Sheer Cover make-up, which is light and feels good on the skin and covers any redness.

I was diagnosed with Ocular Rosacea in November. When I have wine, spicey food, or am in the sun to much my eyes look they have a terrible case of pink eye. When I was at my worst I had to put steroid drops in my eyes 4 times a day and also an antiobiotic cream in my eye at night. I currently am taking no medication, but I will have to again if I have another flare up.

I've been on maintenance metronidazole cream for over 6 years. I get occasional flareups. Just had a big flareup after shovelling snow for several hours last month. I know to stay out of the sun and usually do. I have fair skin (from my Irish mom). Never know when it will flare up again.
I also have Ocular Rosacea, and that scares me more than anything. I am seeing an eye specialist tomorrow.

I also have ocular rosacea which has caused dry eye. I will now have to use Restatis drops for a lifetime.

My derm. saw my "Scottish" maiden name on my chart and said right away that I had rosacea. My sister and brother have it also. I haven't had a flair up in a couple of years. I use metronidazole cream for flair ups.

Thank you all. I'm Irish on my mom's side also and my aunt on that side has it. Last night the rt side of my face was pinker than the left and that whole ear was red too.

That is what mine would do. It would get red and HOT at times, one side only. I got the redness, burning, and itching and saw a Dermatologist. She diagnosed the Rosacea as soon as she saw me. Mine is under complete control now (knock on wood). I use Finacea cream everyday as a preventative. Under my eyelids gets the itching and burning at times. Yes, I am blond and fair, have German, Scottish, and Irish (I think?) in me. I use Bare Escentuals makeup ONLY. :)
Oh, I also have mild psoriasis and mild Raynaud's. You would never know any of this by looking at me as the ointments help!

I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

I bought the Aveeno foaming facial wash for sensitive skin. I will find out how it works when I run out of the Eucerin.

My mom also has rosacea and I am of English, German and Irish descent as well.
