Rope drop question

What am I missing? I know people rope drop for the big rides, but I’m so confused by it. I hear you’re supposed to arrive 90 minutes before park opening, then hurry to your big ride of choice. That seems like at least a 95 minute wait time and I often see the big rides with 75 minute wait time. Help me understand. Is it just to have one of the bigs out of the way early?

It’s so that you’re waiting outside of park hours. So you spend 30 minutes of park time waiting for a ride instead of 75-120 minutes of park time waiting for it.

I see, not to cut down on wait time, but park hours wait time.
