Root Canal - OH MY GOD

I hate dentist visits! I had to have a root canal done but my dentist was great-I never felt a thing-not even the initial shot...I would definitely ask for nitrous oxide or ask to go to an oral surgeon to be put under...like a few have already said-the technology they have today you really don't need to be in such pain. Get yourself some clove oil-it does work! Good luck.:flower3:

clove oil? what's that

THANKS EVERYONE

it's great to hear some many people views and know that there's always an hear (ok eyes and fingers) here when someone needs it.

i love this community :)

Are you on antibotics? I know sometimes I need to be on antibotics for a couple days before the pain gets a little better and before I can get numbed properly. I feel your pain, I've been through this so many times. There is nothing worse than tooth pain. I definitely recommend the nitrous/xanax combination but you do need someone to drive you to & from the dentist. Feel better soon!

yes - i was on meds for a week (just finished) for infection.

apparently it was so bad the nerve was black - yuck.

i was supposed to go back on tuesday to have it finished but because i couldn't change my work it's now booked for next saturday.

i just hope the meds got all the infection and that it doesn't come back between now and then.

i still can't have cold on that side and it does hurt a little but i'm hoping that's just because the rc was only half done

If you feel the pain getting worse call your Doc and get a refill of the antibotics. You should be fine though. Its normal (atleast for me) to still have pain if the root canal isn't finished. Should be slightly better though because the pressure should be relieved! Sorry you can't get in for an appointment sooner! But this whole experience will be over before you know it.

I have always had excellent experiences having RC with an Endodontist. They are amazing....you need more than a conventional Dentist here! Poor you..:sad2:

I agree. Last year I needed two root canals in adjoining teeth, both with multiple roots. The endodontist finished both of them in 1.5 hours! I am very dental phobic so he prescribed a sedative to take 30 minutes before the appointment. I never felt a thing!

It is worth the money to go to someone who knows what he/she is doing, especially if another dentist has had a problem with the procedure.

I agree- I have had many root canals (must be up to about 8 now!) and only ONE has ever hurt at all and that is the one I ended up having to go to an Endodontist for because it was infected. They had to give a shot right into the nerve which did hurt but only for an instant and then beautiful numbness took over! A normal root canal is no more painful than a dental cleaning IMO....infected ones are another story!

Did your dentist get the nerve out? You say that it was black. I'm a dental assistant and in our office, a root canal is a 2 to 3 step procedure.
First step is to remove the nerve, which can be painful, depending on the infection and many other factors. If your dentist found the nerve and removed it, your tooth should slowly become more comfortable in the coming days.

Second step involves " filing", we take tiny files ranging in different diameters and we clean out the inside of the canal where the nerve used to live. This cleans out the bacteria and further increases your comfort.

Third step, the canal is filled with gutta percha, a bio-compatible filling inside the tooth. This step should be mostly painless.

In our office, sometimes we do step 1 and 2 together.

Hope you are feeling better soon. Dental pain is terrible!

no not all the nerve is out - she thought it was dead becasue it was black but as soon as she touched it i jumped then she tried to freeze it and i hit the roof.

she only did half because i was in tears.

she said she couldn't feel the regular land marks which is when she asked if i broke my jaw because of all the scar tissue - makes me wonder what happened when i had my wisdom teeth removed when i was a teenager.

i'm now wondering if i should get a refill on the antibiotics incase the infection isn't all gone - i'm not looking forward to next weekend if it's still there and i'm going to be in pain.

Kurby, sorry you're having such a hard time :sad1: If you have a refill, I would go ahead and do another round of the antibiotics, can't hurt, might help kinda thing.

dh's dental plan is the pits. while they will cover 100 % check ups, fillings cleanings, xrays 50% this that and the next thing 30% root canal we have to choose from a list that they supply - hens the quacks i've seen in the past.

To be honest, most dental plans are relatively terrible once you get out of the realm of checkups.

Since they only cover 30%, I'd just go to someone good, perhaps see if they can work something out with you...

I hear your pain! I had an accident when I was younger and broke some of my teeth, I had about 7 Root Canals.

I do not get numb. Took me many years and many dentists to find someone that believed me. I have been called a baby and a liar. A few years ago I had sedation dentistry done. With an IV not pills as I never go to sleep with those. I just broke a tooth in half. Found a great dentist office. He will do the sedation with IV but can also do general if needed as he is licensed for that. I don't have dental insurance. Honestly though the sedation is only $600. By the time we added up the cost of a ton of shots (usually the max and still not numb) and nitrous ($85) I'm only paying a few hundred extra to be put to sleep. It willl be worth it I know. So for $1975 I will have my crown, a very deep cleaning (haven't been in over 2 years--Oops), and put to sleep. I live in South Florida and everything is more expensive here it seems, but I am ok with this cost. I can not do without it.
