Family of 4 looking to book the Magic, we have done the Dream and the Fantasy, I have read posts of various type "smells" and a/c issues on the Magic. I will book a verandah and I want to avoid any "smells" i.e. sewage, mold, musky old smells. Any advice. Thanks!

I think the best advice is to look and see what staterooms are available on the cruise you're interested in. And then use the stateroom reports here to see if any of them mentioned a particular issue.

That's the problem, I have no idea where to look for a room, trying to avoid those bad ones.

You can see available staterooms for the cruise you are looking at on the DCL website. And there is a thread at the top of this forum with a link to a page to search stateroom reviews. But...not all the cabins have reviews, and many have some people loving them and others hating them (or at least not liking them). It's all dependent on personal preference.

We had a mild sewage smell in our Magic cabin bathroom (a deck 6 aft standard inside, but I don't remember the stateroom #). What I've since read is there is a "p-trap" in the bathroom that is supposed to always have some water in it, & if it dries out, the bathroom can get a sewage odor. Reportedly, you can fix it yourself by finding it & pouring water in it. Gross, but that info might come in handy. Even though our bathroom didn’t smell great, it wasn't horrible & the odor didn't extend into our main cabin at all. That was our first cruise & I thought that odor might be typical in cruise cabin bathrooms, until we sailed on the Fantasy & experienced no bathroom odor at all.

We were on the same cruise as Neptune's Fork and we were in Cabin 6624 not far from the aft elevators. We did notice a sewer smell in our cabin on the second day. We mentioned it to our stateroom host and she said she noticed it too and already reported it to maintenance. We then had an engineer stop by the room and ask us about it. We told him and he said they would take care of it. On CC day we were out of our room most of the day and when we got back the room did not have the sewer smell and they purified the room as well. We were happy.

I think the sewer smell can happen in any cabin...if you encounter it just let maintenance know.

What causes the sewage smell problem? Just a drainage issue?

I had the absolute worst room I have ever had (out of 17 cruises). It was damp and smelled like mildew and cat pee. They tried to mask the odor with air freshener and a fan, but it just made my allergies worse. I left the cruise sick because of it. Avoid 2616 if you can! I've stayed in 7554 and 2558 and loved both of those rooms, but that was years ago. 2558 was such a great location. One flight up from the atrium and close to elevators!

The 10/14 cruise? If so we were across from each other as we were in 6645!

We sailed on the Magic on 10/14 in a Verandah room on Deck 7 Forward, 7022. It was a great room! It was quiet, in great condition, and we didn’t notice any smells whatsoever. I loved this location, it was very close to the Forward elevators but not too close, and it was a quick walk or ride up to Deck 9 to the adult pool.

Good luck!

We stayed on Deck 8 way back in 1999, and the only issue we had was being able to hear folks move the deck chairs on Deck 9 in the early morning.

I don't have specific room numbers you should avoid but when I book my cruise I avoid booking any rooms below or next to any public areas such as pool decks, bars, kitchens, gym, theatre, kid rooms, etc. I also avoid selecting a stateroom near the laundry rooms. Finally I also stay away from staterooms all the way in the front or rear of the ship.

After eight DCL cruises, four on the Magic, we have never had a serious smell problem if at all. Any smell was in the hallway and only temporary. We were always on deck 6 or higher. The only problem we had was on the Wonder, with daughter's family in June in 8004 & 8006, with verandahs, where smoke from the smoking area one deck up and slightly forward came down on us when we were cruising slow or stopped during the glacier day. We complained, a small adjustment was made, but still it was an issue. If you are booking a stateroom forward and high up, go for the starboard side.

We had 2019 and there might be a crew stairwell behind this room. There were tapping sounds at all hours of the day and night. I slept through it but my husband could not. He complained and we were moved to 5630 which was perfect and we were thrilled with.
