How safe are the room safes? Are they safe enough to keep your passports and extra money in? jewellry? Does anyone else have access to them?:santa: :santa:

We always put my purse, passports, paperwork, hubbies wallet in some cases. They are pretty good sized, but not huge. And only the person with the code has access to them. You can change it whenever you want while staying. :)

thanks.. i dont want to carry around our wallets n stuff if we dont have to as well as extra money so i wanted to make sure they were safe

I just want to point out that I doubt this very seriously. I would guess that there is another way for WDW to get into that safe in case something happens that you leave it locked, or forget something, or for some wierd reason the police come with a search warrant and need in it. I just cant see WDW having something they cant get into.

Now, dont get me wrong, I'm sure it is very, very safe, but I just dont buy that no one else could get access...

I know that at the Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian and Wilderness Lodge they all added brand new safes during the room renovations. Instead of the standard ones that come with a key to open them, you now enter a 4 digit code of you're choosing and that opens it up. As far as I know no other Resorts have them yet, so that means they are still using the old ones.

Yeah, they probably have some kind of universal key that only certain people have access to. I'm sure people forget what code they used on their safe fairly often. We have coded lockers at work and if you forget your code there's a certain person you can call to come down and open your locker for you with some special key that can open every locker.

While that may happen, I think a great tip is to make a code that you will remember with no problems. For example someones birthday and etc. Although I guess that's easy to say when you never forget a thing like this.

yeah that's what I always do and I'm sure a lot of people do as well. But there's probably small percentage of people who absentmindedly set a code in the morning and forget what it is by the time they get back that evening.

The best thing to do is to minimize the number of valuables you take with you. I don't wear any jewelry except a watch I'm OK if I lose. I don't take any credit cards I won't specifically need for the trip. I take everything out of my wallet that I don't specifically need for the trip.

Otherwise, I have used the safes at the various resorts for many things, even a laptop (the BCV ones are big enough for my laptop) and I haven't had a problem. I usually put my stuff in the closet in front of the safe (whenever possible) to make it as difficult as possible for someone wanting to break in. I also (especially on my longer trips) make a point of being in the room a few times when mousekeeping shows up, so the word can get around that I may just be in that room at any time (as opposed to being out in the parks all day). I don't know if any of those precautions really help, but that's what I've done and so far it's worked.

Never, ever, ever leave anything of value lying around in the room. One of my co-workers had jewelry taken from her room at the Yacht Club that she left out on the dresser when she went to the pool. She admits she was stupid, but she was in a hurry to meet some other guests and just didn't think until it was too late. If it won't fit in the room safe, leave it with the front desk (and get a receipt!). A lot of people have access to your room when you aren't there, so take precautions.

This is just me, but everytime I've travelled to Europe (UK and Germany) I've always left my passport in a safe deposit box at the front desk. The safes at Disney are reliable (and I have left my passport in there but I'm still in my 'home' country) but if you're not a US Citizen I would really implore you to keep your passports in a safe deposit box at the front desk.

I'd keep photocopies of your passport in the room safe. :thumbsup2

Some of the resorts have safes that actually have a key, not a code. So you do have to make sure the key is safe. I end up carrying it around with me all week.

I have a small wallet with a keychain attached that I only use at Disney. I put my KTTW, AP, my driver's license (sometimes if the AP doesn't work, I need it to get in), my cash for the day, and then attach the safe key. I'm good to go!

Most safes that have the ability to use a password, will also work with a swipe of your credit card. Don't use your birthday, as it might be on info easily accessed by one that is less than honest. You may use a combination of your kids birthdays, etc....still easy to remember, but harder for someone else to figure out. Also, don't forget to remove your items from the safe when you leave...this is not uncommon. I usually set something on top of or next to the safe that will help me remember to remove my items.

Hey Debbie, the safe in the room at Pop is very small and will only hold things like your wallet and pasports. It isn't large enough for a purse or anything that is ver large. I usually put mine and my mom's wallets and our checkbooks and extra cash in them. These also close with a key and if you take it with you no one will have access to it but you, except maybe management. I have never had a problem with them, except that they are very little. They may be about 5 inches deep, if that much. I think the Deluxe resorts have larger ones, the one we had a WL was a little larger than the ones at the Value resorts. Iput my purse minue valuable in a drawer, so if anything should be taken, it would only be my purse.

Hey girl, we have less than 16 days to go

Suzanne.... I know and I CANT WAIT.. we got dumped with about 30 inches of snow the past 2 days .. I'm soooooo ready to sit by the pool. lol Are you doing the happy dance yet? lol If my list gets any longer of stuff to bring i'll have to buy another suitcase. I made a Mickey Mouse head wreath for our window at POP yesterday. It looks sooooooo cute. Cant wait to put it up.
As for the safe I'll just empty my purse of the important stuff and leave the purse in the drawer. Put the passports extra money and wallets in the safe. How you doing girl? Hope things are settling into place for you :)

I have really been getting excited. I am ready to start packing for the trip, but have to keep packing for moving, but we are quickly running out of room in the new house for stuff from the old house. Couldn't you share some of that snow. The last time it snowed here was the January after we got married, Jan 2002 and only for like a few hours, guess i'll have to move up north if I want to get snowed on. That is great to have a wreath, I can't even find time to make up a few Lime Green Mickey Heads for my backpack, I'm either at work or working on arranging things in the new house or laundry.

We have learned to tone it down on the packing a little bit, but not much, cause I have to take more than one pair of shoes, and this time of year you have to take warm clothes too, so it is really hard to leave things out, cause I might need it. I know it much be hard with you guys flying, but we have limited trunk space, so when it gets full, then no more gets put in there, DH might have to wear the same clothes several days in a row :lmao:

Come on December 19.

You two are hilarious!! We're arriving on the 25th after a too-long break and packing is the WORST part of going this time of year. We were down there one year prior to Christmas; temps were anticipated to be in the 60's or something, and I packed ONE pair of shorts with all sweatshirts and jeans. Wouldn't you JUST know that it ended up being in low 80's all week long with the exception of the first day? Talk about doing a LOT of laundry!! And I was sick of those shorts by the end of the week!!

Wishing us all great trips!! :santa:

Thank you, that is a compliment, we try to be as light hearted as possible.

When we went last year, it was colder in WDW than it was at my house in Alabama. We were glad we had packed those heavier clothes. I was supposed to be warmer, but wasn't. By Friday, I was wearing a 2 piece long sleeve sweater set and a heavy coat, gloves, and a scarf, and I don't really get very cold in the winter, I hardly ever wear a coat. It wouldn't have been so bad if the wind hadn't been blowing and a couple of those days were cloudy, but at least it didn't rain, not that that would have stopped me.
