We;ll be going to SSR on Aug. 14, I just found out I'll be having foot surgery on Aug. 8. Dr. said go ahead and go, but you will need a wheelchair for extended walking for comfort purposes. The plan then is to get one at the parks, so my question is, Is SSR good about granting a room request to be close to a bus stop to minimize walking or will they blow this off? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I would call MS and request it and let them know the situation so it can be noted on your reservation.

That said, I would get a wheelchair or a scooter for all times if I was going to WDW a week after foot surgery, regardless of where I stayed or how close to the bus stop they put me. WDW is the 1 place you really need to have happy feet and if your feet arent happy, you may have a less than enjoyable trip.

There's not 1 resort I can think of where the amount of walking is not a major issue, especially for someone coming off of a surgery.

Wishing you the best for your surgery and have a great trip:wizard:

Why not rent a wheelchair from an offsite company? Then you'll have it for use around the resort, as SSR is a large resort.

Note on your reservation that your request to be near a bus stop is a medical need, that should increase your odds of a getting a suitable location...but I would still have a wheelchair for use around the resort. As you know, WDW busses load wheelchairs pretty easily, and each bus can accomodate at least 2 chairs or scooters.

I agree with the idea to rent a chair from an offsite medical supply, and maybe even rent a scooter. It is so easy to get them on and off the buses, and I had to take a couple of trips with one. It would have meant the difference between going and staying home, so I rented an ECV and went. That will keep your family from having to push you too.

You also might look into the use of an SSR chair. I know each of the resorts have guest wheelchairs availbel on a first come first serve basis.

FWIW, I have been at WDW with someone who had surgery (knee/hip). I would say don't even try and get the wheelchair at the park. It's a first come, first serve situation and you do run the risk of not having one available. You can't "reserve" one because of medical need - all those other people have a medical need also! Also, when you leave you cn't take it back to the resort, so if you are tired you will still have to manage the walk to the busses and back to your room.

Reserve a chair or scooter from an offsite vendor. They will have it at the resort when you arrive and will pick it up the day you leave. No hassle, no muss. I don't remember exactly who we used, but the Disabilities board has names you can call .

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I was all for renting a scooter but DH says, "I pushed a stroller around for years, I can just push you around." He's thinking I may not need it so don't put money into it if it is unnesecary.

Not only is SSR long, as someone who rented strollers for years and therefore knows the location of every stroller/wheelchair rental in the parks, the distance from the bus stop to the stroller/wheelchair rental in Epcot is LONG. The rest of the parks aren't too bad, but the walk from the bus stop to the gates can be fairly long.

I'd rent to reserve one, if you don't need it, you can cancel. If you get to the parks and the wheelchairs are gone for the day, what then? Your husband is going to need to suck it up.

We were at SSR last Christmas...very busy. Dad just had back worked on and started having trouble half way through the trip. We had no problem getting a wheelchair from SSR and taking it on the buses to the parks. We already had a 1st floor room so that helped too.
