Can you book room only and call to add on dining? I thought I read that somewhere. Can anyone confirm?

Yep. It's easier to just call and book the room and dining all at once though, because one is a package and one isn't. They'd have to cancel/rebook if you add the dining after the fact.

Note that once you do that, it's a package and package deposit and cancel rules apply.

Even without tickets yes.

You can book room + DDP (without tickets) by calling, but it's not as easy as just adding the DDP to a RO reservation. Since RO and packages are different reservation systems, money paid toward one cannot be applied to the other. With that said, the RO will have to be cancelled/refunded and a ticketless package booked, requiring a new deposit of $200.

Thanks for the heads up mickeynut1! I haven't reserved anything yet, so it sounds like it's best to just call it all in at one time. Good to know...

You're welcome! If you know for sure you want the DDP, it's best (IMO) to book it as a package from the beginning to avoid cancelling/refund/rebooking :).

I spoke with a cast member yesterday who I felt gave me some pretty good advice. I asked him to quote just the room and dining plan. He asked me if I was getting tickets from a third party and I told him that was my plan. He suggested that I book room/tickets/dining through Disney, that way once they release promos like free dining and if my reservation is eligible I could have it applied - if it wasn't eligible, I could have them remove the tickets from the package and purchase from the third party. Do any of you have thoughts/opinions on that bit of advice?

That's one way to do it. However, it's no different/easier than if you have booked a ticketless package and have them add tickets in order to qualify for Free Dining. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
