room only while waiting for code/promo?

A question for the expert planners:

So let's say I decide to book for a certain date (let's say June or August) but I want to be able to ask for a code or promo if one comes out.

Would it be a good idea to get a room only reservation for the resort I want and then, if/when the code/pin/promo becomes available, call and ask to upgrade to a package and apply it?

Or should I be booking a package straight away?

Thanks!
aj

If you know you want a package to begin with, I would book that as a discount on the room can be applied to a package just as it can be applied to a room only reservation. The discount would be on the room portion only, but it can still be applied. Keep in mind that not every resort and room type is always available with a discount. Disney offers discounts to fill rooms, so if the resort you book is near or at capacity, there would be no need for Disney to discount it. So you may have to be flexible with your resort when/if a discount is released. Also, if you book room only now and change to a package later, the room only reservation will have to be cancelled/refunded and a package booked, requiring a new $200 deposit as money paid toward a room only reservation cannot be transferred to a package, and vice versa.

There is absolutely no reason to book a room only reservation if you know you are going to need a package. You can not "upgrade" or "convert" a room only reservation into a package reservation. You would have to cancel the room only reservation and they can't even apply the money you put down on the room only to a new package reservation.

Go ahead and book your package and when the discount you want comes out, just call and have them apply the code to your existing reservation. If for some reason your resort is "sold out" of a particular discount you can have them look for availability at another resort - you do not have to cancel and your reservation number stays the same even if you change resorts. But, really, if you call when a discount is released, there should not be a problem have the discount code applied to your existing reservation.
