I currently have a room booked at the Caribbean Beach but not through Disney. I linked it in the wed site. If I now buy tickets, does this turn my room only into a package, subject to the "package rules" for cancellation instead of room only rules?

As far as I understand packages are defined by purchasing both a room and tickets in the same transaction but I could be wrong.

Your room would still keep the cancellation policy that was in effect when you booked it. If you buy tickets they will not expire until 14 days after first use. So, if you had to cancel your trip. Your tickets could sit in a drawer and be ready for you to use when you could reschedule your trip.
