Room-only rate vs. package - why difference?

I have made a room-only ressie for early March at the Poly. On a whim, I went in to price out the package and see if adding the dining might save us some money. After I added on tickets and before I added on dining, I calculated what the price of the room must be. Why is it $15 more per night for the room on the package than it is to reserve the room separately? They show the amount for the tickets so I'm assuming the rest is room rate. Is it the price of having Disney's computer make the booking for you rather than calling someone on the phone?

$15 per night???

I've priced many equivalent packages and room-only/ticket combinations and have had the difference be $5-$10 per package, but not per night...

What are your dates? number of people, ages of children, types of tickets??

I'd love to run the numbers.

Our dates are March 5-March 9, 2006 (even though we are at the Swan from March 1-March 4 - but that is under DH conference and is paid for). I saw the rate at the Poly for that time is $435 ($485 w/ tax). When I ran the package it came up to closer to $500 (I assume that's with tax) per night.

We plan to purchase tickets from Shades of Green, but I ran the 9 days of tickets under the package to see what they would add up to. Under the package, I believe the tickets came out to $890. (2 adults, 2 children).

I'm thinking it is just too complicated to do part of our trip without a package and part of it with the package, but depending on the savings, I might be convinced to deal with the hassle.

I currently have a ressie at the Poly using AAA discount ($436 - includes tax) since there are no overflow rates from SOG and no AP discounts for people who don't plan far enough ahead.

OK. Is that complicated enough for you???? See what I mean about not being worth the hassle?
