We will be going in Sept/Oct. Planning on staying at POR or POFQ. Usually buy room and park tickets separate hoping for a deal but I am thinking there won't be any deals in the near future. We often get a room discount and/or Canadian park ticket discounts. What are peoples thoughts year?

There have been discounts for September in prior years but October discounts have been scarce. I would have said that Disney wouldn't have discounts this fall because of the popularity of WDW. But with gas prices rising and inflation getting worse, that all could change.

We like the flexibility of a room only reservation. :)

Even though the hold time is brutal I always call to make my reservation. This time I booked room only cause I wasn’t ready to commit to a package and they booked my room only as a package without tickets somehow. Then when I went to add my tickets they just added it to my already existing package.

If you buy a package and have to cancel (within cancellations guidelines/penalties, etc.) you have only paid a $200 deposit and you just get it back and your done with them.
If you book room only to start, you will put down the price of one night as a deposit, which of course you would also get back if cancel in guidelines which are closer to the date. But then, if you had purchased tickets somewhere else, you now have those tickets for a future date. So the initial output is larger.
However, the package has to be paid a month or so in advance, so its all being paid then. Where room only is when you get there.
Just depends on what you want to do. I usually just package it up from the beginning. Alot of times when Im making reservations I buy the tickets with the package at a certain price, and then Disney raises their ticket prices at some point and then Im locked in at the lower price. So, if your certain your getting them through Disney and not elsewhere, Id just do it now before any price increases can occur.

Yeah I will do package. I think it will be easier this time. I am sure in the past I have gotten a room deal and an Canadian deal and then it was a bit of a hassle as they had to be separate ... Disney did it for me. I don't see that happening this time
