Room discount after dining plan?

We are FL residents (AP holders) who have never had the dining plan. We always just have room only reservations.

For a change, I would like make reservations for early December and add the dining plan.

Since doing this will technically make our reservations a package, will it interfere with applying the room discounts, once they come out?

Dilemma #2 - Our two youngest sons (19 & 23) still live at home and sometimes come with us or show up for at least part of the stay. Between work, school, and social activities, they never know until the last minute if they are going or not.

They both have their own cars and often just do a partial stay. However, I always add them to the room at the front desk so they can get room keys and take advantage of EMH. Never a problem without the dining plan.

From what I have read, dining plans must be added at least three days in advance & every occupant of the room must be on it. So, does this make it impossible for me to add one or both of my sons to the room at check-in or later?

I'm thinking I would have to add them both to the room from the beginning and just end up with tons of extra food. I wish dining plan credits would carry over to the next visit.

But, I'm still left unsure if I could get the room discount with the dining plan already added. Anyone know the answer to this?

You can add the dining plan, but you must make it a package. You can apply discounts at a later date if there is availability in the resort. Discounts are done to fill rooms.

All those listed on the reservation must be on the same package; that would mean your sons would have to have AP's as well; you have to all book it the same way.

However, you can add them at the time of arrival and they can still obtain room keys and pay OOP for their meals. Many people do it all the time, especially since you don't need the ME service, you will be good to go. They will get parking passes for their car(s) at the resort that will also entitle them to parking.

My sons do have APs. So, can DH and I be on the dining plan and have sons pay OOP? That would be ideal since they come and go.

Because of EMH and parking they always have to be added to the room.

The discounts we always use that time of year are room only so glad to hear I could still get (if available) even if I had added the dining plan.

Thanks for your answer!

AFAIK, you won't be able to add them to the room at the last minute. They will be able to do OOP dining, but not participate in EMH since they will not be staying in the resort.

Just FYI, you can not add the dining plan for just one night. So if your sons came you would have to add them for a minimum for 2 nights whether they are there or not. Just out of curiosity, why are you wanting to do the dining plan this trip? In your OP, it sounded like you thought if you wanted to make advanced reservations that you had to have it. Just FYI, you don't and I know this has been hotly debated over but its really not a money saver anymore. Some like it for convenience but we just put whatever the dining plan would cost us on a Disney gift card and then bought what we wanted. Not only did we spend way less we didn't feel like we had to eat food that we didn't want....just to get our "monies worth". Just my opinion but thought I would give my 2 cents.

If you add your sons to the reservation after check-in, they WILL have room keys and can participate in EMH. They just can't use the dining plan because there won't be credits allocated for them. Doesn't matter whether or not they sleep there if you pick up a key for them.

You can add your sons in this fashion as long as you are going to pay OOP for their meals. You may end up paying an extra adult charge though.
