OK so this may sound like a silly question but can anybody tell me how room charging works? We have been to Disney many times over the years but we have never charged to the room and am just curious how it works. We have always just paid as we go during the day.

You leave a CC on file With your resort. When in the parks or at different resorts, you just use your magic band For any purchases. Includes food, drinks, photos, souvenirs, etc. You can also have your purchases sent back to your room. They get there the next day. It’s nice so you don’t have to carry them around with you. I guess they are doing that now - may not be because of Covid.

Some more info. First, they do not deliver purchases to your room, they deliver them to your resort where you can pick them up the following day. Also, you can control which MB's can be used for charging. i.e. I did not allow charging for my DD's when they were toddlers. The part I like best is that, since my DW does not carry any CC's, I would always have to be there or remember to give her a CC. Now, any one of us (including our DD's) can buy something without needing a CC. Also, to use the MB, you need to enter in the PIN code, that you set up for it, to make any purchases. We always use our MB's to charge back to our room and love it, especially our DD's.

They’ll put a hold on your cc for a certain amount (usually $100) and when you’re spending exceeds the hold they charge the card and put a new hold on it. You can go to the front desk to pay off the bill with gift cards (or even cash I imagine) every evening before they charge the card if you wish. And you don’t have to have a cc on file, but if you don’t then obviously you can’t do room charges.

If I do early check in and load a card on MDE, am I ready to go or do I still have to the front desk to set up room charges?

You're ready to go. Disney will put the $100 hold on your card about 6am of check-in day.

So if I understand you correctly I can pay by giving the front desk gift cards or cash instead of them charging it to a card?

You can pay off a balance before it is charged to your card. But you cannot put money on account. I had a few bucks on my Disney Rewards card and went to the front desk the night before we checked out and applied it to the balance.
