Room Block Question

Hi guys! I've got a question about the room block and I think I've confused even my planner and pretty much everyone else with what I am trying to figure out :ssst:

I have blocked 50 rooms for my wedding between pop century and the contemporary. Our wedding is during a holiday weekend so I wanted to secure more days than I normally would have so that they don't sell out.

I understand that up to 2 months out I can reduce the block to 25 room nights. So, my question is this: does anyone know whether I am locked in to booking these 25 rooms at pop and contemporary at that point because I can't reduce the # any further?

I have a lot of people who will stay at other Disney resorts, so I should be able to meet the 25 room night requirement easily. I'm just wondering if I MUST still fill those 25 rooms at pop and contemporary regardless, or whether they just be released back to the public if I don't need them and I met my minimum outside of the block?

Just wondering how hard to push my room block before save the dates go out. If I am locked in to those 25 rooms at pop and contemporary regardless and am on the hook to fill them or pay for them at the end of the day, I will push those two resorts. Hopefully this makes sense, I appreciate any insights from other brides who may have booked more than 25 nights in their block to begin with. Thanks!

I don't know the answer, but I was thinking about the same thing. I know a lot of our guests are going to be staying DVC and we will have no issue getting the 25 nights, but I also want to block extra rooms since we will be blocking Beach Club (along with probably Pop and POFQ) during Food and Wine next year. Mostly concerned about Beach Club though.

As long as you have 25 nights booked somewhere it doesn't matter if they are in the block directly or not. I had a room block but no one actually booked through the block, we all found better discounts so our booked rooms using them. Not a single room in my "block" was booked but I got my free night and didn't have to do anything with my original block.

Perfect, thank you!

If I remember from your planning journal, your free night was at the end of your trip. I may be remembering incorrectly, though.

When I asked my consultant, she told me the free night needed to be used during the blocked nights. Did your block extend all the way to your free night (even though I know you didn't actually book any nights through the block)? I'm hoping we can use our free night after we go on a week long cruise, but my consultant told me that wouldn't be possible.

Otherwise we'd probably have to use the free night as our first night. We'd rather not use the free night, then have to move, since we would only have 1 night after the cruise it would be easiest to use it then.

our room block was the maximum number of days before and after our wedding (4 or 5) but because we had two long stays they included all our nights towards our total. We did use our free night on our last night but I had to confirm it with my room block coordinator, my planner wasn't sure it would be possible. I can see how they might be reluctant to allow it to be used a week after you leave property (in their eyes anyway). If they hadn't let us use it that late I would have used it during our first week when we were still at Baordwalk because it didn't seem worth it to get a free night at Coronado when we could have a free night at a deluxe.

But did you block more than 25 room nights to begin with?

If I recall correctly (and things may have changed since 2012 but this is how it worked then), you need to fill 80% of the rooms in your block. So if you reduce your block to 25 nights, you need to fill 20 nights. They do not have to be at your blocked resorts if your guests booked at other Disney hotels, all you need to do is provide their confirmation number to your block coordinator to get those reservations added to your block.

If you were to fill say 16 nights of the 25, you would have to pay for the 4 nights (to get you to 80%), at the lowest rate in your block (Pop in your case). That said, I know when we did it they told us we could reduce to a number under 25 nights if we needed to. We originally blocked 50 nights and ended up with 108 do not didn't and up being necessary. If you're close, you could always reach out here or on facebook if you're in one of the groups to see if anyone has a reservation that you could use toward your block to get you where you need to be.

Anything you have blocked that is not booked by 30 days out will be released to the regular inventory for the general public.

Just talk to your room block coordinator - s/he can make this happen.

I think I started with 28 rooms blocked
Ok, and if you weren't on the hook for those 3 specific rooms after you were able to "reduce your room block by up to 25 room nights" then that answers my question. Thanks so much!

I ended up with 44 or so rooms going towards my block and wasn't on the hook for any nights.
