Room availability

I know I have seen posts about this issue before, but I'm not sure if there is a solution for it. Right now we are booked for 11/24 at Pop, then 11/25-12/2 at CR. We are looking at possibly arriving late 11/23 instead due to flight prices, but Pop shows no availability for 11/23 alone, or 11/23-11/24. But it does show availability if I try, say, 11/23-11/30.

I also thought about switching to AS Sports. It shows available for 11/23 and 11/24 separately, but not together. I wouldn't mind, except I believe there would be no guarantee that we could stay in the same room, right?

I know this has to do with the way the reservation system works, with preference (I guess?) given to longer stays (although that doesn't explain the AS Sports thing). But anyway, my question is, has anyone had luck with calling Disney directly to book to get around these issues, or is the availability they see the same as what we see?
 
Call in. However, I often find that the website shows more availability than the cast members get.
