Hey y'all! I've been lurking for a while and am jumping in! We're going 8/3-8/6 and are staying at POP. I was wondering, do they assign your room when you get there or what? Does it cost extra for preferred? Is it worth it to go preferred?
Thanks in advance.

A perferred location does cost more. You can send a room request fax to the resort but there is no guarantee you will receive any better room than what you put on your ressie.

We stayed at POP last September. I called Disney reservations and put my room request on my reservation. Then I faxed my request directly to POP a few days before we went. We checked in and got our first choice as far as building and ground floor so it worked for us. I do not think it is worth it to pay for preferred in my opinion. We were in the 60's (I think) right by the main pool, but facing the lake. It was quiet (no pool noise), but very close to the lobby/food court too. I thought it was the perfect location. I was probably about a 20 second walk from the preferred locations which were right by the pool (noisy). Hope that helps!

At POP the preferred rooms, that cost more, are just because of their location. They are nearer the main building/food court. The insides of the rooms are exactly the same. IMO the preferred rooms don't get you that much closer so not really worth the extra. There are a lot of good locations, actually I don't think there are that many really bad ones.

For one of our stays at Pop Century, the room we had been assigned wasn't acceptable to us (it was smoking back when there was a difference). The room was a standard room and we had stayed in standard before. For the trouble, we were given a preferred room for free (I think preferred is $10/night more? but it does cost extra). We did NOT like the preferred room at all. I didn't t hink we were any closer to the food court or bus stops. It seemed louder because of the location. I'm glad we were given the preferred location, though. Made it easier in my mind that I don't have to request it in the future.

You should have your room requests noted on your reservation when you make it. If you've already made the reservation, call back and have the requests put on there. Put the requests in order of importance. If a first floor room is important, put that first. And remember that the more requests you make, the less likely you are to get your perfect room.

Rooms are usually assigned a few days before you get there. Faxing a request is not recommneded anymore but you can if you want.

And remember that no request is ever guaranteed unless for medical reasons or for connecting rooms with more children than adults in one room.

I've stayed at POP 4 times now and have never paid for preferred and have always been close to pools and the lobby. The first time we didn't put any requests in and were assigned a room in the 80's and it seems like it was the farthest possible room. We called down right from our room and requested another room closer. We were then assigned a great room overlooking the lake in the 70's section. After that we learned to always put a request in and we have always gotten it. Usually I'll just request 50's, 60's, or 70's. We've had 2 rooms in 70's and a room in the 60's which was literally just on the other side of the preferred rooms. I just can't see paying for preferred at that resort because so many of the rooms are not far at all. Even if you initially given a bad room, at every resort I've stayed at in Disney we were able to get a better room. I might have just always been fortunate though.
